It took me exactly three CDs. I got three new CDs in the mail, and I can't just sit and listen to music anymore (too antsy) so I did this, so that I could put that box of postcards away and not have to feel like I should do something with them.

I was going to make another image at the bottom of the page, but the third CD finished.

They do, you're right. The cardinal, tanager and the blue jay are all the same peacock-y actor. There were others that looked just deranged, but these were the most birdlike.

Speaking of Mitteleuropa, this reminds me a little of Elias Canetti's essay collection of 'characters', Earwitness. I much prefer yours, though. Much.

The imagination's probably playing tricks, but I can't help thinking I'm familiar with your male phalarope. Pity Google doesn't have an image search in which you can paste the face of someone whose name you seek.

Mr. Sea Snipe is one 'Jwan (Ivan) Petrovich'. This is likely a publicity still from a 1926 film, "The Magician", the plot of which is pretty damn provocative, in that pre-Code way, silent way: "A magician/alchemist, seeking to create life, finds that he needs the "blood of a virgin" to continue his experiments. He sends out his dwarf assistant to pick out the right girl."

Unless it's from one of the other two Petrovich/Terry pairings: "The Garden of Allah": "Father Adrien had taken the vows of eternal silence, prayer and, of course, celibacy, when he entered the Trappist Monastry of Notre Dame d'Afrique in Algeria. One day, he chopped down a tree that blocked a part of the Monastery wall, but as it fell it knocked a young girl senseless. As Father Adrien bathes her face she regains consciousness and in a mischievous mood embraces him. The embrace was seen by another monk but the Monastic discipline imposed is as nothing compared to the torturing penances of mind and body which the contrite Father Adrien has imposed upon himself. Holy Mackerel. You went to the trouble of typing all that out for me. Thank you, M.

I didn't realize that was Alice Terry. I knew of her, but I suppose the cloche hat made her look like 'just another blonde' (the title of yet another silent film). According to IMDB, she died in Burbank, so if she died in a hospital there, it's almost certain it was the one I worked at when I was 19-20. I love learning things like that ( ... )

I have that self-same prized book; it's one of my favorites.

There were two postcards of R.N. as well, but I sent them to someone who had a Ramon Navarro site that I stumbled across, years ago. It made him very happy. Generally, I don't like to think about Ramon Navarro; everything about him makes me sad.

You know I'd happily scan and upload those photos, but I'd have to find them first. Hello, rub.

I have a headache from too much sun and lawnmowing just now. That's wht I am typing oddly-tersely.

It's more that I have many boxes of junk than a remarkable imagination. mwittier July 26 2005, 04:52:02 UTC
That's flattering, I'll take Rufie. Several years ago, before he was as well known as he is now, I thought I had a massive crush on him, and I don't crush much, ever. Then I met him, and was cured. I still really love his music, but I have to divorce it from knowing what he's like or it's ruined for me.

If I ever sit like that though, please shoot me dead.
