This is lovely. Like paean_sf, I hadn't given Alice much thought before this fest, but I have now.
The setting is very tangible and the girls' relationship is solid and lovely. We know their futures are tragic, but this is a beautiful, very present, happy moment.
I try hard to not think about the future when it comes to this generation of characters :D They're all so lovely. I'm glad you liked Alice here. Thanks for the comment!
I don't know how to describe this properly but with the scene that you set here, I really got a sense of almost a sort of old-fashioned friendship between the two--a real girl's bond, bosom friendship type thing that I normally find only in older literature. I really liked it.
Thank you. I'm a huge fan of that sort of story, I guess (Anne and Diana in Anne of Green Gables always springs to mind) so I'm glad you saw maybe a tiny bit of that here. It's a huge compliment, so thank you so much :D
I really like this scene a lot--especially the contrast between the cold outside and the warmth of the cabin. It's a good metaphor for Lily and Alice seeking refuge from the war with each other. The hint of a past relationship between them works well--it makes their kissing seem innocent and platonic in a way, like they are still schoolgirls exploring their sexuality, a really natural thing for them to do. It doesn't take away from their love of James and Frank, and it doesn't diminish what they are to each other either--it's just in its own undefinable category. Really nicely done.
Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted the story to do, not take away from James and Frank but still give the girls a moment of their own. I'm glad you liked it for that. Thanks for the comment!
