It had been crying long enough and the breeze was right to gently kiss its yellow-orange spirit to put it to its final rest, and cast swirls of smoke to go dance with the gust, slowly pulling them up and high and dissolving them to become one with darkness. That was the last strand of light he was privileged with, the last one, and the flat piece of metal in his hand was beginning to sweat his palm. It stung, it stung to see the spark of brightness to succumb to its last breath when all the while, he couldn’t do anything but remain seated on the hard wooden floor, uncomfortable, and watch, holding on to that small piece of cold metal that he wanted so bad to throw away.

Almost about a minute, he didn’t have the right device to validate accuracy, but he counted the number of times his wrist had pulsated and it took that long for his eyesight to completely adjust to the loss of light. There were very few things to see in the dark and his eyes were sore, lazily fluttering close and open from the lack of sleep, but the whole space, enclosed by the four thin walls was now bathing in a faint silver glow coming from the night goddess and that had to make him smile even just a little. Everything in the room was draped by shadows but they glitter oddly like sorts of unearthed jewels against black sand, even his arms and legs, but most especially a face, the sleeping face of that precious being lying covered in blankets next to him, the very reason he couldn’t spare a single blink of tiredness.

Observing the flickering flame shine on his smooth skin was enough to etch contentment on his lips, he had been awake for hours to just admire but watching him under the radiance of a quarter coin pasted in the heaven nearing its dawn was dragging the air out of his lungs. Certainly, it wasn’t perfect because he needed to see his features, the colour of his cheek, his playful brown eyes, his nose, the plush lips, the childish smile, he had to, and badly too because now, he probably couldn’t survive a day without his own daylight reminding him that he had existence. The world was cruel to him, to them both but it was bearable when he didn’t have to slit his wrist by himself because he had someone to hold the blade for him; if time would stop, they had each other to spin with in endlessness.

For him, he was prepared to do all, pick up anything and dump everything despite how broken they were or of how providence seemed to have turned its back on them. He wasn’t always as powerful as he desired to be and he could survive like it but he still wished to waste his remaining life gazing at him without seeing him heave a heavy breath every time, because he was just utterly beautiful when asleep.

But that frustratingly felt so far away; the sound of approaching metal wheels grinding against its metal track was too loud to keep his precious sedated in his own dreams. It was the end of his solitude as he gradually stirred in consciousness, wiping sleep off his eyes with the back of his hand. If only he could really throw away the flat piece of cold metal in his hand, he would, in exchange for a few more minutes of him in his innocence.

“Saga?” he was whispering low. “Why didn’t you wake me up? We’re going to be late.”

“No, we’re not,” Saga was too quick to argue. Yes, we are, and for the first time, he was thankful that the candle was burnt and that the piece of flat cold metal was still sweating in his closed palm. His eyes really did hurt.
