To crappy Americorps, or not?

Alright, so with 4 months out of school and very little work done to my life that has any sort of relevance to my degree, I took the gauntlet and went for the Americorps. For those of you who don't know, Americorps are the "Domestic Peace Corps" which promote community service and love throughout the neighboorhood

go for it! You have nothing else on your plate. try to be nice and find something that will make you look like you care about the people. It will look but you wont make money. I've worked on a lot of short films and haven't made any money but I did learn a lot about the business that I'm trying to break into.

Yeah but my business is not trying to break into helping people business. I'm still anxiously waiting on the WI thing, but I don't know.

I say go for it if you feel confident you could find a second job someplace and good housing that isn't behind Rizzo the homeless man's two tier Maytag box home.

I always thought the Americorps did international work...maybe i'm thinking peacecorps or some other pseudo American military power show-off organization...either way they'll make a man out of you yet.

As for your worries...if every unknown was known then there would be no point to keep on doing things or even to live. I'll tell you what I tell Jen when she gets that way: Man up and punch the first person you see when you get there. Of course in that is just a metaphor..."man up" stands for the courage to open the door to wherever you want to go and walk inside without being afraid of the possible "what ifs" you came up with to deter yourself. By punching I mean to fight and conquer your own fears, insecurities, and faults to be the best type of worker they hired you for.

But it would then mean I'm working obscene hours, getting food stamps like some gutter whore with too many kids, and always worrying if im going to make those reuired 1700 hours.

Their version of international is more like they go to PR and Guam.

I don't want my door to be extremely poor and always tired and stressed out. The housing thing is really what worries me the most.

you could just try it, see if you like it, work your way up the ranks and stay...or try it, hate it/dig it, and then apply to something better and international like the Peacecorps or some non-governmental organization that does good deeds...im guessing pay wit hthe NGOs is better than the gov and it is international...so win

Might as well, a good transistion job, also teaching you how to be the working poor too :D

Or apply as a job for a military desk jockey.

The loan deferment could come in handy, but $4700? You could make more working just a regular 8-5 job.

Then again, you get that snazzy title and said experience with working with the poor.

Good for short term, but definitely not something long term unless you get boosted to a manager's position with pay better than $60K.

its only 9 months. It would be a good transitional between now and JET but I don't even get the 4700 (which also gets taxes :D) unless i complete all 1700 hours which is going to be a squeeze since i'd start sept 15 for all of the lateness (everyone else starts tomorrow).

The pay rate seems shitty
11k plus 4k loan forgiveness is about 15k for the year

7.50 X40X52= 15.6k
So its basicaly minimum wage
though there is 10 months loan deferment
which helps
less shitty than I thought but still not so hot

If you can get a job that pays 9 an hour 40 a week go for that
If not maybe americore works

maybe If my grad school stuff doesnt go through Ill do that instead of korea
