When she woke up, the sun was shining brightly through the window and the King-size bed was empty, save for her and her pillow. She sat up and glanced around the room, noting that everything was in its place, just where she last left it. Glancing down, she saw that she was wearing a nightgown that she hadn't owned in nearly six years.
From the doorway, the sound of a guitar being strummed caught her ear and pulled her attention away. She scooted herself to the end of the bed and padded across the carpeted floor, trying not to hurry, but desperate to get to the door before he disappeared.
Everything was wrong - deep down, she knew it wasn't right - but she wasn't even going to stop and question it. There was only one explanation for the guitar and, as she stopped in the doorway, she could see him, sitting on the long sectional, guitar on his knee and very much alive.
'This is all wrong,' her mind told her, but she didn't want to hear it. He was there, alive and well, and that was all that mattered. Besides, it wasn't like this was the first time her mind had played tricks on her. Granted, this was the first time her mind had gone to such great lengths for such a simple delusion.
She held on to the door frame, wanting desperately to go to him, to hold him, to feel that he was really there. But, the rational side of her, the side that knew he was nothing more than a figment of her mind and heart, wouldn't let her move. She watched as he, back turned to her, finished playing the simple tune and then pulled the guitar away.
"I'm not really here, y'know," he said, turning his head just enough to catch sight of her out of the corner of his eye. He did love that color on her... almost as much as he loved taking that particular shade of green off of her.
"You're here until I decide to wake up," she said in a shaky voice. She sucked in a breath as he stood up and turned to her. Tilting her head slightly, she was thankful to see that he wasn't injured; he looked just the same as always. As he stepped toward her, she frowned. She could see the look in his eyes, the hint of a frown on his lips... he was going to make her wake up.
Shaking her head as he stepped closer, she nearly let go of the door frame and backed away. "It's time for you to wake up," he nodded as she shook her head. "You can't sleep forever."
"You won't be there," she whispered, feeling the tears threatening to fall.
"Yes, I will," he said quietly, taking a step closer. This was the worst torture; she could smell him. "I'm always here," he continued, reaching a hand up and, with his knuckle, indicating the general area of her heart. All she had to do was lean forward, a quarter of an inch, and she could touch him. But, before she could actually work up the nerve to try, he'd already pulled his hand back.
He turned slightly, moving to return to the guitar, and she held up a hand. "No, don't..." She moved forward, automatically, and, just as her fingers grazed the fabric of his sleeve, he was gone. Not only was he gone, but so was the light; and her old, green nightgown had been replaced with her current, blue one. Sucking in a breath, she turned and realized she had been awake the whole time.
Wrapping her arms around herself, she dropped to the floor and finally let the tears fall.
