Ah, mallards. Lots of experiments have been done to study their imprinting behavior, made most famous by Konrad Lorenz. Mallard ducks learn a preference for the call of their own species, which makes perfect sense of course but the experiments conducted to confirm this were actually quite interesting. Juvenile mallards will follow a stuffed "mallard" with far more frequency than a stuffed wood duck or chicken. But as babies, if the nerves to their voicebox are cut while they are still embryos, they never hear themselves "speak" and therefore don't learn the voice of their own species, and never have a preference for it.

Science!
