Ryan knew it from the moment he met him. The day he and Spencer were in Spencer’s garage when Brent came in and gestured to the boy behind him.

“Hey, guys, this is Brendon,” the bassist had said as he pointed with his thumb to the boy who had moved to stand next to him.

“Hey,” the other said shyly as he waved his hand in a way that was both nervous and excited all at once. He smiled, glasses perched on his nose as he stood awkwardly in front of them.

That’s when Ryan first noticed; noticed the pure light that just seemed to radiate, bringing forth the safeness and security in his own body. Ryan had felt Spencer’s stare on him as his stomach had lurched; turned at the sight as he watched his walls start to crumble around him, not bothering to put up a fight or make a sound as they began to crumble, the cracks beginning to form immediately, leaving the guitarist to feel venerable and uneasy.

--

It never felt like falling. On the contrary, it felt like floating, floating in the air without any boundaries. He didn’t care less if gravity forgot to put him back on the ground again; he still would’ve had the feeling. But whatever terminology it was, Ryan knew his feelings for Brendon were the strongest he had ever felt for anyone else on earth.

So when he got that knock on his door at three AM in the pouring rain, Brendon standing on his doorstep drenched to the bone with a backpack strap strung over his shoulder, the cracks began to swell, stretching and growing with the pressure.

“I can’t be in the band anymore, Ry,” Brendon had confessed while he had stood in the hallway, finally out of the rain due to some coaxing, as he ran his fingers through his soaked hair. “I just… I can’t, I need to go to hairdressing school, I need to just go, I…”

“Listen to yourself,” Ryan had said simply, but his voice shook and his hands trembled. “Listen to how stupid that sounds, think of what you’re throwing away.” He trailed off, fidgeting with his hands as he watched the droplets of water fall from Brendon’s clothes onto his carpet. “Think of everything that could come from it.”

“But no one would even care, Ryan, no one. It’s not like I have anything going for me here, y’know? It’s… don’t get me wrong, Ry, your words, they’re amazing, it’s just… they deserve to be sung by someone better, someone who can do it right.” Brendon stood awkwardly across from Ryan as he adjusted the strap on his backpack and his lower lip was caught between his teeth. His hair still clung to his forehead, tee-shirt and jeans stuck cold and wet onto his skin.

“But that’s not true…” Ryan had tried desperately as he stared at the younger boys face in the dim lighting of the entryway. “The band would care, I would care… I don’t want anyone else!” the guitarist took a step forward as his body shook from fear and desperation. “I only want you.”

The moment he brought his lips to Brendon’s and the younger boy kissed back, Ryan felt his walls crumble to the ground; felt them give into the pressure and allow the singer in, permitting him into his heart, his soul, his everything.

--

When Brendon moved into Ryan’s apartment, he knew he was pushing it. He was making the younger boy break all of the rules he was raised with, pushing the envelope on the rules. But he never forced the brown eyed boy to do anything, which made the guitarist’s stomach turn and his lips curl up into a smile at the thought; Brendon did it all on his own. He wanted it.

Brendon was like the sunshine to his night, the thing that kept him going every day, the reason he got up in the morning. Without Brendon, Ryan was nothing. His lyrics meant nothing. His life meant nothing. They were two pieces of a puzzle, co-existing, feeding off one another for every aspect of life.

And Ryan wouldn’t have it any other way.

--

Ryan held the other boy close as the sobs raked through the singer’s body. He stroked his slender fingers though the boy’s soft, brown hair, whispering soft words and encouragements as his other hand traced small circles on the others back. He could feel the tears staining his shirt, melting into his skin, but he never let his hold falter, never let his guard down. He couldn’t. Not now.

“H-how could they just… just…” Brendon sobbed and Ryan kissed the top of his head, holding him closer.

“Shh, don’t worry.” He soothed as his own heart clenched. “They’ll come around, shh, shh, don’t cry B, don’t waste your tears.”

“B-but they’re my… my family! My own family, Ryan…” Brendon whined desperately into Ryan’s chest as he clung to the fabric of the guitarist’s shirt, hands balled into fists.

“You don’t have to worry, B,” he whispered before he kissed the other boy’s forehead. “I’ll never shut you out. Ever. That’s a promise.”

--

Even now, as Ryan lies comfortably next to Brendon in the hotel bed of God-knows-where, he can still see that light that he saw on that first day; the light he’s always seen. His lips twitch into a small smile as he brushes some of the singer’s hair from his face and the younger boy opens his eyes. They’re tired and close pretty quickly, but that smile, that perfect lopsided smile comes to the singer’s lips and Ryan’s stomach turns.

“What?” the younger of the two giggles before he snuggles closer, nuzzling his nose into Ryan’s neck as the guitarist’s arms wrap around him, holding him close.

“Nothing.” Ryan smiles before he kisses the top of Brendon’s head, looking out into his mind at the vast field and blue skies, walls nowhere in sight, nothing but openness and trust. “You’re my fallen angel, B. I love you,” he whispers and he can feel the singer’s smile tingle on his neck.

“I love you, too Ry.” The younger whispers as he gets closer.

“Don’t let your halo fade, Bren. Don’t let that light go out.” Ryan nuzzles his nose into Brendon’s hair as the singer places a kiss to the older boy’s collar bone.

“I’ll never leave you alone in the dark.”
