I stayed by manhattan (by work's penny) but hung out in the village and got drunk with all the vagabonds-that should be you. go to the bar in clockwork orange! see the nasty wallpaper! otherwise I also suggest Little Italy. you can walk throughout the whole city in a day. there's also a three story Toys R Us! :D (stay away from touristy areas) There is a Ferragamo store. You'll love the shopping. but i walked through the subways with my scarf over my face-i have germ phobia there....it was like disneyland's population. . .CROWDED! and I hate crowds :[ take tons of pictures! I posted mine in my journal-you should have a looksy at what you're in for ;) (mind you this is all talk from a LA girl)
as of right now, the only show i know of that's happening and possibly worthwhile is lungfish, however lungfish is an aquired taste and it may not be toms thing (and probably not yours, as i'm thinking about it...), lots of shows will be popping up soon though that havent been booked yet so i'll watch out. there's this a amazing day time party that happens at PS1, which is like the MOMA's progressive indie sister museum, but the last day is 9/3 so you'd probably miss that
