This is in spite of the fact that I do have insurance.
It just turns out that my insurance only covers up to $200/year of prescription costs.
I also don't really have any choice as to what kind of policy I get. This is the only one available to me. So it's not like I chose the wrong policy or something - it's the only choice I had.
Yeah, actually. I mean, no cheaper than the $250 but they do know some legitimate ones. That's probably what I'm going to end up doing.
This whole problem boggles my mind. Fortunately I have family who are in a position to help me with this. Anyone else in my situation would be faced with, basically, two options: 1. take out an additional, very large, loan, and 2. drop out of school. I guess 3. would be get a job at Starbucks - a possibility I haven't written off, actually.
How are you? How are things going? How's the UK - are you back yet?
My dad spends a shit-ton of money on the insurance plan his job offers him and it's really rather useless, unless you want a yearly checkup at a clinic or very basic meds for a temporary illness. Our dental "insurance" is even worse. Things like ambulance rides and hospital visits and cavity fillings and such things that most people have to do from time to time are hardly covered. I'm grateful that my family is mostly healthy, because I'm not sure what we'd do if not.
I'm really sorry you have to deal with this; I wish there were something I could do to help.
About the Obama thing--I'm learning more about him and I think starting to move from uncertainty to supporting him. So yay!

Here's the thing with the health care system in this country. Those of us who oppose it tend to automatically say that it's bad because it screws over the poor who can't afford health insurance. This. . . is only partly true. If you are really dirt poor, then you automatically qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid coverage is lousy and many doctors won't take it, but many doctors will, and it IS coverage that covers the mundane expenses of GP visits and things, and any more catastrophic expenses that come up (though I believe it doesn't cover anything "elective," but what is considered elective by the government is often not considered elective by the patient. For example, things like transplants are considered elective in some states but not in others, I think). Medicaid also, notably, covers prescription medication

The second group that gets screwed by the system are the sick, and they are the ones who are screwed the most. Adam, above, is one textbook case - his problems would have been averted if there had been a way for him to get the test he needed. I am another textbook case. I make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but my health insurance doesn't cover my very expensive pills. It's exceedingly difficult for me to get health insurance because I have Crohn's disease. As long as I never go uninsured for more than 3 months, my Crohn's will continue to be covered by any new insurance policy that I get - they are required by law to cover it. But right now, my coverage is insufficient and there is literally not a single damn thing I can do about it. And if I ever go uninsured for more than three months for any reason, I'm completely, 100% screwed because my new insurance company would not be required to cover anything related to Crohn's disease until I've been subscribed to their plan for one year. That's a year in which they won't

I'm really sorry you and so many people are getting fucked over by America being stupid and not taking care of its citizens. I almost reached through the TV and strangled Guilliani during the debate last night when he said that we have the best health care system in the world (sure, we do, but who can afford to use it?).
I'm also starting to like Obama more, but I'm still undecided. I just want the Democrats to shake some shit up and get people the health care they need.
