Re: I, Robot - YES! Read the book. The movie is actually not as dumbed down as I'd expected, but the book is brilliant. Also, reading the book makes the movie a lot richer
( ... )
Yeah. Wait for the movie. And as for RE:2 -- well, hey, dude, don't say I didn't warn you. It's got some nasty zombie-ness, but you may be amused to recognize Toronto landmarks. ;)
hehe. Scanner Darkly. What I reallyreally enjoy about that book is how the characters actually make sense. It's very real and very personal and even something as bizarre and nonsensical as Bob's yes-or-no?? 'thing' with Donna makes absolute sense. I love it how Bob is pathetic and perpetually tired, has no idea what's going on but still maintains the pretense of being in control. I love how Barris is a charicature of a villain - but how that, too, makes sense in the context of drugs. And kleptomaniac, OCD Donna, love her as well.
Didn't you find the ending terribly chilling? I did.
I had to reread that last part a few times, yeah. At first I though I must have misunderstood something. Then I realised that, no, I got it, and it really was that odd and. . . yeah, chilling is the best word. Damn.
Just wanted to say: add Fiat to the list of car names. And Range Rover. Oh, and there was a plane also identified as a something-or-other 731 with twin turbo-prop engines or something.
Yeah, the Davinci Code sucks...it'll make an interesting movie though. I think Ron Howard is directing it. Oh, you HAVE to check out this commentary on it though, it's by one of Sean Roger's friends (which will indicate the kind of people we're dealing with) and it's hilarious: http://www.livejournal.com/users/uselessmatt1985/184303.html I have a copy of Elaine Pagel's commentary on the Gnostic Gospels, but it's in Toronto, but I believe I saw a copy of it at this AWESOME used/rare bookstore here, I can see if I can get it. Even though it's not the actual gospels themselves, it gives you a pretty good indication of things. I've been meaning to go to a church bookstore and get a copy of the texts themselves, that and the Apocrypha (which the Orthodox Church still includes as a part of the good book..haha). Well I'm glad that the earthquake was okay, there wasnt anything on the news here.
Yeah, Pagel's commentary is actually what I was after more than anything -- I'd like to read the orginal texts, of course, but right now I think that that's too much to put my brain through when I'm still so busy trying to do things like learn Japanese and figure out enough Kanji to navigate a menu (heh, yeah right on that one). Yeah, DaVinci Code is pretty silly. . . neither of my parents liked it,and you didn't like it. . . my friend Katie liked it, however, and she told me that her mother said that it was blasphemy, which is mostly the reason that I ended up reading it in spite of all the bad reviews I've gotten. I figure that if Katie's mom says it's blasphemy, it's got to be doing SOMETHING right, but there's a backstory to that that's too long to tell here, and isn't really my story to tell anyway.
I'll have a look at that link.
Oh, and dude, I want to try to call you this weekend. I *think* it's a 12-hour time difference. . . .
Woah, pulling my livejournal user name out of retirement for this one. Yeah, someone recommended the Da Vinci Code to me, so I picked it up in the store, read the first paragraph and promptly put it back down. I don't care how interesting the ideas might be. NO FREAKIN WAY. I just read "The Master and Margarita" (did you read that one? it's the one Jodie is always pushing), and it was awesome. I also read the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, which for some reason I hadn't read before, and I couldn't put it down.
Yeah, I finished it. . . it's really, really, really silly. Entertaining, sure, on a superficial level, but pedantic to the point of being patronizing and just poorly, poorly, poorly written. Da Vinci Code, I mean, not Master and Margarita, which I haven't yet found. You should really read The White Bone, dude, you'd love it, it's incredible. My next novel is going to be Helen Zahavi's "Dirty Weekend" and after that "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" And after that, hopefully, I'll have tracked down more english books as that is the end of my current collection in Tokyo. My mom's mailing me some stuff that I expect to be good as her taste in books has always been pretty reliable from my experience. If you have a copy of Master and Margarita, then maybe whenever I eventually see you we can arrange a trade, eh?
