Does someone have a good way for me to tell my extended family I don't want anything for christmas this year but instead would appreciate if they donated to charity in my name? I think its such a douchebaggy thing to say but this year I really would like this to happen.

you can ask they give you money and that you are taking a collection for __________charity. But having them donate in your name is basically giving you money to donate and asking for the glory anyway. Might as well not sugar coat it.

I understand what you mean, and this isn't my intent at all... but I am terrified some of my family would donate to an organization like focus on the family in my name... I was a bit hast in my email though, I sent a chain email to my extended family telling them whats up with my life, and at the bottom I added a lttle blurb about two charities I really like

(http://www.edhifoundation.com and http://www.jacarandafoundation.org) and asked that any money they might consider in spending in a gift on me to please donate instead)

its to people like my grandma and aunt and uncles... They'll be thrilled to hear from me in the first place, and I think they'll be happy I'm sheddiing materialism or somthing. (I still want things...)

One x-mas I just flat out told everyone that instead of gifts from me, that instead I was making donations to the Boulder Humane Society instead.

I didn't make it any option.

Everyone was very happy with it, actually.

I think the problem is that a lot of your family might see this as "well, he doesn't want any gifts, and I don't particularly want to give to a charity...so we will just call it a push." And then nothing happens.
