I think it was a case of the book really spoiling the film, bit of a shame really. I see you've posted about it so I'll go and read that next!

i just read your review properly just now. it does sound like things are a lot different in the book and it does seem to make the film a lot better if you didnt read the book first.

i loved the film but never read the book.

from what i have heard from other people the ending seems to be completely different in the film, which i suppose it would be if he didnt parachute into the square in the book, that was just a little thing but it would have actually changed the story quite a lot

Yeah from what I can remember he parachuted in secret and then appeared suddenly on the roof of St Peter's so everyone in the square thought it was a real miracle. Also he sets himself on fire on the balcony, so everyone can see - in the book it seemed like a much bigger scene than it was in the movie.

This is why I don't read the book before seeing the movie, now I may not bother, I enjoyed the movie for what it was, a reasonably good thriller with plenty of action, of course Ewan looking gorgeous in a cassock helped! LOL

Glad you enjoyed it! I thought he looked particularly gorgeous all battered after the parachute landing for some reason (lol). I just wish they had made his part bigger... but I suppose there is only so much you can fit into a film.

So, I guess it's good that I plan to wait and see this on DVD, then. I just want to see A&D for Ewan, but if he doesn't play a major role in it, then it's not going to place as high on my 'must-see' list.

I think you might like it if you've not read the book first - I spoilt it for myself! His part is a reasonable size, but of course it would have been better if he was in every scene!

Oh, I see. So, there's still hope for me then! (Haven't read the book at all, *lol*) And his part is reasonable? That's good to know. As long as it's not some 5 minute part like what he had in "Stormbreaker", then that's good. Heh.

I would highly recommend to go and see the film, and not just wait for the DVD.
The music was so good and all the sceens to and the excitment of the film is great.
I read the book and saw the film. Both were excellent and Ewan was too, besides being gorgeous.

Hi Anne----I read your review, and I can see you were disappointed in the film.

I read the book and I wished that more of Ewan's parts in the film too. They left out a couple of really important parts, but if you see the film and didn't read the book, then you really dont miss them.--- What you don't know won't [hurt] bother you.

I think the film turned out very good.
I thought Ewan played his part a bit like he did Iago.
If you don't know any better, [after reading the book], you think he is what he seems.
I really enjoyed it....

Hi char,
It seems like most people really enjoyed the film so maybe I was just in a critical mood when I saw it! I think I have spoiled myself a little seeing ewan play iago - he was so amazing in that, it's going to be difficult to find a film role as good!

Hi Anne----I really wish they had followed the book more closely especially the very importnat part with the Pope/father story line.
It would have explained why he was like he was.
And the ending should have been the same as the book.

However after saying that----I still very much liked the film and I thought Ewan was fantstic.
Of course he could have been even better if they hadn't omitted a lot of the good parts from the book.

But it was fantastic to watch Ewan up there on the big screen, and I loved all that he did in the film.

I had said before that I thought Ewan was going to own this film, but with the re-write, Ewan didn't get the chance to act to his full potenital...

It's a shame that they had to leave out very important part. I don't know what they were thinking.

It still was worth it to go and see it, and more then worth it to see Ewan...
