World's Largest Replica Cheese
Neillsville, Wisconsin
The story of the World's Largest Cheese is an inspiring one, requiring the combined efforts of the Wisconsin Cheese Foundation and 16,000 cows. This 17-ton cheddar was displayed at the 1964 and '65 New York World's Fairs, and toured America in-between in a glass-sided, refrigerated tractor-trailer known as the Cheesemobile.
The Cheesemobile now occupies a place of honor in Neillsville, next to Wisconsin's World's Fair pavilion (converted into the broadcasting studios of radio station WCCN) and Chatty Belle, the world's largest talking cow. Inside the Cheesemobile, its refrigeration system long retired, sits the World's Largest Replica Cheese, which replaced the real one when it was eaten at the 1965 annual meeting of the Wisconsin Dairymen and Cheesemakers Association.
For years this titan remained unvisited -- ignored by misguided purist pilgrims who would rather visit the paltry 10-foot wheel of real cheese kept in a sealed kiosk in Berlin, Ohio. Then one of the summer help kicked the plug out of the real cheese's refrigeration unit. Now Neillsville has the unchallenged adulation it deserved all along.
