I had a weird half dream the other morning (you know where you're somewhere between sleep ad wakefulness) that they didn't explain how John and Sherlock get out of the pool situation. They just barreled on ahead as though it never happened and in the dream I was sitting there on my couch going, "WTF, Mofftiss?!"
My co-worker and I have a theory that the bomb is a fake and that this is Moriarty just messing with Sherlock's head. Which makes some measure of sense as Sherlock is playing into his hands at that moment in time.
Ooooh. That's not a bad theory actually. Moriarty's all about fucking with people's heads. And it works well with that little smirk he gives as Sherlock lowers the gun to the jacket. And also explains why he doesn't just have one of the snipers take Sherlock out as soon as it becomes apparent what Sherlock plans to do. He has way too much of a sense of self preservation to just allow Sherlock to blow them all to kingdom come. He has to have a way out. Plus, he has to survive in order for the Reichenbach Falls to happen. If the scenario I've seen played out the most in fics and artwork, i.e., John taking himself and Sherlock into the pool as the bomb goes off, were to happen, I don't see how Moriarty could escape.
I would love a moment where they have come to the end of another successful, gruelling case and they're both on the couch at cosy little 221B and Sherlock just lays his head on John's shoulder for a moment, closing his eyes, and John puts his arm round Sherlock... fade to black.
