I hope you read this before you get out there, or while you are out there--if you do, try to get ahold of the VA, or if you can't do that, any military installation that is related to his branch of service.
If all else fails, Camp Pendleton is in San Diego, and even if your dad wasn't a Marine, they'll probably point you in the right direction. Marines tend to be helpful like that.
See, if your dad was in the military, it's rather likely that he /did/ have some form of life insurance through them. And your mom might be entitled to benefits, as his next of kin.
At the very least, they might help you get everything squared away.
