I don't think its so much about that I think its more of a critique of men who choose not be "men". Since "real men" are so non-existent those of male gender have conformed to this new subset of the what a male is. i dont know..i just like this quote cuz it speaks volumes to me about current issues i have with so-called "men".

You're well aware of how men, real or otherwise, as a gender, are constructed. What you find "real" in the gender description may just be an old model, perhaps even the one against which Emerson lived. And through/after Emerson and his quote, another acceptable subset of the male gender is, ironically enough, identifiable non-conformity as a prerequisite to masculinity.
