TITLE: Love and Hate

SUMMARY: One has taken everything away from the other.

"You just let him go?" Shin Donghee asked as soon as Hyukjae entered the room, jaw tight and clothes in disarray. "Aren't you worried that he's going to be prey for those vampires waiting for newborns?"
Hyukjae ignored him as he removed his shirt and Donghee understood. No one was going to attempt to hurt Lee Donghae because the foolish newborn contained blood belonging to one of their race's strongest. And no one was stupid enough to incur Lee Hyukjae's wrath.
"Are you alright, Hyukjae?"
Hyukjae buttoned the new shirt he had put on and ran a hand through his hair. "I'm fine."
Donghee ignored the obvious lie and went in front of the younger vampire. "You are going to go after him, aren't you? If something happens to him, you're bound to be affected, too and we can't have that, Hyukjae."
"No." Hyukjae turned away and gazed out of the window into the bleary landscape. "The more I force myself on him, the more he will push me away. It's best to leave him alone at this time."
"You are aware you're putting yourself in danger, aren't you?"
"Yes, but that's okay. He'll need to come back to me sooner or later anyway to feed. Maybe by then, he'd have come to terms with our situation."
"Hyukjae, you don't seem to see the enormity of this situation! You're in danger every minute your mate is out there! If he is killed, you---!" Donghee froze at the glare directed to him.
"He's not going to be killed, "Hyukjae said firmly. Then he closed his eyes and forced himself to relax. "He's going to be okay and I'm going to be fine. I'm sure of it."
The older one shook his head but let it go.

"Well, well, well...What do we have here, a newborn vampire all alone?" Where is your sire?"
Lee Donghae backed away from the the predatorial-looking vampire and searched for a way to escape.
The vampire, noticing Donghae's restlessness, smirked and moved forward. " Don't worry, young one, it's going to be quick. You won't even feel anything."
Donghae could feel his heartbeat pounding as he took bigger steps backward.
Just as the vampire was an arm's length away from Donghae, someone suddenly stepped between them. The predator had growled as he'd raised a hand, ready to strike the intruder away when the newcomer lifted his head and revealed his face.
The vampire, clearly rattled at knowing the newcomer's identity, suddenly backed away.
"You're not quite right in the head, are you?" The newcomer said, a smirk on his pale handsome face. "Not observant enough, too, I see."
"W-What do y-you mean?"
The newcomer laughed. "You don't recognize his scent?"
The predator gave the air an experimental sniff and reeled further away, panic in his eyes. "I-I didn't know---"
"Obviously," the other drawled out. "Make use of that empty brain of yours and be sure that the others know."
The vampire nodded, his eyes darting to Donghae once, before he bowed and disappeared into the shadows.
As soon as he was gone, Donghae turned to his savior and smiled gratefully. "Thank you so much. If it wasn't for you---"
"You are a stupid one too, aren't you?" The vampire looked at him with appraising eyes. "But since you're a newbie, it's understandable."
All through this, Donghae had gaped mutely. He watched as the vampire sat on the ground. He followed suit soon after, keeping a considerable distance between them.
"You don't need to worry, Donghae-ssi, no one would be fool enough to bother you after what has happened," The vampire said after a while.
"Y-You know me?!"
At that, the other laughed. "You've just ran out on one of the strongest of our kind and you expect me to not know you? You really are more stupid than you look."
"E-Excuse me?"
"But then again, Hyukjae is stupid too, for letting you go. If something happened to you, he'd bound to be affected...that guy, really, tsk..."
Noticing the darkening of Donghae's features at the mention of Hyukjae, the vampire smiled mockingly. "Oh, don't be that way...I know that we both know that you feel something for him deep inside."
"Of course I do! I hate him!" Donghae looked at his unlikely companion and summoned all the anger he felt. "He ruined my life. I was happy and he took it away from me---!"
"We're you really?"
Donghae stopped and looked questioningly at the other vampire. "Was I really what?"
"We're you really happy?"
"Of course." Donghae anwered instantly. He was happy. He had been happy with his life.
"You weren't." The other said decisively as he gazed at Donghae with eyes that seemed to be able to see his deepest secrets. "You weren't happy. Not absolutely, anyway. You had been dreaming of someone, weren't you? Someone else. Someone who wasn't your ex-boyfriend."
Donghae gazed at him in disbelief. He had never told anyone about his continuous dreams about a man, a man who always had his back to him, his figure only a silhouette in the dim light, the man who haunted him constantly at night. Most of the time, just as this figure was about to turn around and show his face, Donghae would wake up.
It had frustrated him greatly.
"Y-You're not saying that the one in my dreams is H-Hyuk...is him, are you?"
The other smiled but said nothing.
Frustrated and confused, Donghae stood up abruptly. He turned away and was about to leave when he remembered a statement Hyukjae had said.
"Is it true that if I kill---if he dies, I die too?"
"Yes. Your life force is dependent on him."
"Then, if I die, he dies in return. Is that right?"
"No. But your death shall weaken him severely."
Donghae nodded as he digested the new information given to him. He turned around, bowed swiftly and was swallowed in the shadows before the other vampire could react.
Moments later, another vampire revealed himself from the shadows. "You were supposed to take him back to Hyukjae, Kyuhyun."
Cho Kyuhyun merely shook his head as he pulled his mate to sit on his lap. "Nothing to worry about, Sungmin. He'll hold on for a week or so, but he'll get so hungry that he'd have no choice but go back to his mate."
"Speaking from experience, I see." Lee Sungmin mocked playfully.
"I guess you could say that, " Kyuhyun replied, his arms tightening around the one in his arms.
He couldn't wait to see how long Lee Donghae could last.
