TITLE: Love and Hate
PAIRING: HaeHyuk, KyuMin
SUMMARY: One has taken everything away from the other.
----
Lee Donghae placed a hand against the side of his neck where Hyukjae had bitten him. Aside from feeling a little lightheaded, he felt nothing at all. He wasn't in pain and contrary to his initial belief, he didn't even feel disgusted. Somehow, it just felt right.
Shifting his gaze, he focused on the figure beside him. He had been alarmed when Hyukjae had started to fall, thinking that he had done something wrong but it turned out that Hyukjae had only fallen asleep. In slumber, Hyukjae looked much more peaceful but Donghae knew that it was a misleading sight because behind those closed eyelids were orbs filled with too much sadness. Smiling ruefully, Donghae started to reach over to brush some stray strands of hair from Hyukjae's face only to stop before his fingers actually touched the pale skin.
Curling his fingers into a fist, he withdrew his hand and settled instead for pulling the blankets up around Hyukjae's shoulders. In the freezing room, Donghae realized that his mate was the warmest.
His mate.
My mate, Donghae thought, wrapping his mind around the foreign idea of owning Hyukjae. He needed to get used to using such a possessive term but looking at the beautiful sight before him, Donghae knew it wasn't going to be that hard.
Everything Kyuhyun had told him explained a lot of things and Donghae knew he was just a breath away from accepting Hyukjae fully. But before he could do that, he needed to do something.
And Donghae knew he needed to do it as soon as possible.
-------
Donghae was startled enough to stop walking when a figure suddenly materialized in front of him.
Breathing deeply at the familiar face, Donghae exclaimed, "You have to stop doing that!"
Lee Sungmin glared at him intensely. "We've talked this over, Lee Donghae. I am not letting you leave."
Donghae frowned before smirking, a challenge in his eyes as he skirted around Sungmin at an astonishingly high speed. Successfully evading Sungmin's attempt at catching him, Donghae smiled cheekily.
The older vampire looked amused for a second before he allowed a small smile to peek through. "You figured out your abilities?"
Donghae shrugged, smile still in place as he started to circle around Sungmin showing off his newfound speed happily. To a human eye, he was nothing but a blur: a flash of brown hair there and a glimpse of a dark blue shirt here.
But Lee Sungmin was no human and to his eyes, Donghae was still slower than the average vampire. He shook his head slightly as he allowed Donghae to show off for a few more minutes before he caught the younger's arm and stopped Donghae's movement.
"You're not that fast yet, Donghae-ssi." Sungmin smiled as he tightened his hold on the other's arm but that smile fell when Donghae spoke.
"I'm not running away, Sungmin-ssi. I just need to do something and then I'll come back and stay forever. I promise."
Sungmin did not release his hold. "You should know, Donghae-ssi, that promises mean nothing to me."
The two of them stared at each other for a long while. Soon, another figure made himself known as he walked out of the shadows. He stopped behind Sungmin and placed one of his hands on top of the hand that was gripping Donghae's arm.
Donghae glared at Cho Kyuhyun.
Kyuhyun met his gaze as he wrapped his free arm around his mate's waist and bent down to be able to rest his head on Sungmin's shoulder.
Not breaking eye contact, he whispered, "Let him go, agi."
Sungmin did not move. "Why should I?"
Kyuhyun did not answer, opting instead to rub circles on Sungmin's hand. Donghae noticed that after a while, Sungmin's hold on him loosened until his arm was free.
Donghae backed away and watched as Kyuhyun wrapped both of his arms around Sungmin and the two of them remained there staring at him.
Kyuhyun smiled slightly but his voice was threatening when he spoke. "If you don't come back, Donghae-ssi, I will personally go and hunt you down."
Despite himself, Donghae felt the chills creeping up his spine. He nodded stiffly at the two vampires and turned around. He was only a few meters away when Kyuhyun spoke again, his voice sounding eerie in the silent forest.
"In case you didn't know, Donghae-ssi, I'm the best hunter of our kind."
-----
The day Donghae left was also the day that Kyuhyun and Sungmin left to go for their monthly hunt. They got back two days later to find Hyukjae pacing in the living room with Donghee watching from a distance away. Hair in disarray and blanket hanging on his shoulders, it was obvious that he had just woken up.
Sungmin and Kyuhyun could tell that he had been crying too.
As soon as the other noticed them, he turned and stared at them for a few silent seconds. Hyukjae looked at Sungmin searchingly before whispering, "He left?"
The heartbreak in the soft voice was too much and Sungmin moved forward to hold the younger in his arms. "Hyukjae---"
"I-It's okay..." Hyukjae continued, the sound of repressed tears present in his voice. "It's okay...I---I was expecting it a-anyway..."
"Hyuk..." Sungmin stopped as Hyukjae's arms tightened around him. He knew that despite Hyukjae's outward appearance of indifference, the younger had been relieved and hopeful when Donghae came back and gave him his blood.
He was also sure that no matter how the other acted, Hyukjae was feeling abandoned at this moment.
"He said he would be back, Hyukjae." Sungmin hoped he wasn't giving Hyukjae any false reassurances with his words. "He said he needed to do something but he'll be back."
"R-Really...?"
Sungmin pulled the blanket surrounding his friend and fixed it around Hyukjae. "Yes." If he won't Kyuhyun and I are going to hunt him down.
"He'll be alright?"
At this, Sungmin shared a look with Kyuhyun, both of them remembering Donghae's display of abilities before he left. Mirroring the smile on his mate's face, Sungmin nodded. "Yes, Hyukjae. Your mate...well, let's just say he's stronger than he looks."
------
Donghae crouched low in the bushes and truthfully, he was feeling ridiculous. He knew that he didn't need to make use of such extreme measures in hiding, after all, he could choose to be invisible to a human eye if he wanted but he just wanted to make sure that he was well hidden.
If his memories (and sense of smell) served him right, then in a few minutes his ex-boyfriend would appear. Sure enough, he heard a familiar laugh moments later. Peering through the space in the bushes, Donghae saw his past love with another and the two young men were laughing at something he wasn't able to catch.
Looking at the face of the first person he had loved, Donghae was plunged back into his memories. They had had good times, he remembered, times when Donghae thought that nothing could ever break them. They had bad times too, but they were quickly solved because the both of them hated fights.
And now, the person he loved, the one who stayed up late at night just to make sure his fever went down, the one who brought him joy and peace of mind was with someone else. And Donghae surprisingly felt...nothing.
He would have panicked at his lack of hurt or jealousy even (because hell, that person had been his world for quite some time and it's not normal to not have any violent reactions when you see someone you love with someone else) but instead, Donghae realized with relief that he felt...free.
He was ready to start anew.
He was ready to go back to Hyukjae.
He was ready to love again.
------
"Good morning."
He smiled as he saw the semi-startled expressions on the two vampires' faces.
"Ah, Donghae-ssi, " Kyuhyun greeted him, eyes smiling despite the still emotionless tone of voice. "You're finally back. I was just getting ready to go hunt you down."
Donghae kept his smile as he turned to Sungmin. The smaller vampire looked as serious as ever but Donghae could detect a small amount of approval in the other's dark gaze.
Sungmin gestured to the single lighted window in the otherwise dark house. "He's just about to wake up. I think seeing you first thing in the morning would brighten up his day."
Donghae nodded, anticipation making him nervous. "Yeah. Uh...thanks." He glanced up at Hyukjae's window again before shooting another grateful look at the two vampires before him and walking purposefully towards the house.
"Well, agi, what do you think?," Kyuhyun asked as they followed Donghae's retreating figure with their eyes.
Sungmin squeezed Kyuhyun's hand and smiled. "I think today is going to be a very sunny day."
----
Shin Donghee smiled and patted Donghae's back in a congratulatory manner, his smile getting wider as Donghae raised an eyebrow.
Donghae was sure something was up. Everyone had been acting weird around him all day and he wasn't sure what the big deal was. Kyuhyun kept giving him teasing looks (complete with the occasional winks), Sungmin finally smiled at him genuinely and Donghee had been acting like a proud mother.
"Hyung, is there something wrong?"
Donghee smiled wider. "Nope, Hae-yah. Ahhh, going on the First Hunt today, huh?"
Donghae nodded, looking at the stairs in reflex. He was currently waiting for Hyukjae to come down. They were going on their first hunt together. Looking back at the other vampire, he raised a question he had been wondering about. "Hyung, what's so important about the First Hunt?"
Before Donghee could reply, Kyuhyun spoke up. "Let me see...Hm, how do I explain it to you? Okay, let me put it this way, Hae-yah, the First Hunt is like, um, the first date...or....the honeymoon! Take your pick."
"H-Honeymoon?!"
Donghee shook his head and chastised the laughing Kyuhyun for his choice of words. Patting the shocked Donghae on the shoulder, he explained, "Let's just say that the First Hunt is the first serious step in any relationship, Donghae. The hunt symbolizes your unity. It shows that you are one, that you are both willing to take responsibility over the other, that if worst comes to worst, the two of you will be together."
Donghee smiled as he saw the younger's expression of understanding.
"It also serves the purpose of deciding who gets to dominate, Donghae," Kyuhyun butted in before Donghee could stop him. "So if I were you, I'd do my best."
"Kyuhyun! Stop saying things that are going to confuse him!"
Kyuhyun laughed and moved away, satisfied at seeing the contemplative look on Donghae's face and the determination in his eyes.
He was sure that Donghae and Hyukjae's hunt was going to be fun to watch.
-----
Hyukjae smiled indulgently as Donghae sped up, leaving him few feet behind. He could outrun his mate if he wanted, but he didn't. Besides, the smile on Donghae's face was beautiful to see and he almost couldn't believe that this was the same person who had threatened to kill him less than two months before.
"Come on, Hyukkie, I'll leave you if you keep on lagging behind. Hurry up!"
Hyukjae pouted and crossed his arms, "I'm tired!"
Donghae laughed at the adorable display and backtracked so that he was in front of Hyukjae in a matter of seconds. "Really?" At his mate's nod, Donghae presented his back to him and said, "Come on, I'll give you a ride."
He caught Hyukjae's look of surprise and grinned, knowing that Hyukjae did not expect him to say that. "You don't want to?"
Hyukjae shook his head and quickly moved forward to wrap his hands around Donghae shoulder's. The other grasped his thighs and lifted him up with ease and began to run forward.
Hyukjae tightened his hold on Donghae as they accelerated, the wind whipping both of their hair around their faces.
"Still okay back there?" Donghae asked and Hyukjae nodded. He stopped under a big tree and carefully placed Hyukjae down on the ground.
Turning, he smiled and cupped his mate's face. "Still tired?"
Hyukjae didn't know why but he nodded (white lies hurt nobody, after all, right?) and leaned into Donghae's touch. He looked up when Donghae said, "I know a perfect way of re-charging."
"But I already fed, Hae."
At this Donghae laughed and moved closer until they were practically breathing the same air. "No, silly. I meant this."
And with that, he pulled Hyukjae close to share their first kiss.
