I like the stamps......are they leaves? If so, they "fit" with the outdoor look that the kids are in.

Your son's pic looks a bit boxy... I'm talking about the dark lower right corner. You seem to have softened it by your daughter on the left.

the stamps... thank you! i carved them myself, they are supposed to be wheat or resemble it anyway. in the middle photo the kids are walking along a dirt lane at my parent's farm. the other two were taken when we went pumpkin picking this past summer. it just seemed right to have some kind of plant in there.

i agree with you on G's pic. the plan is to do the same to his jacket and shirt as I did for K's pink jacket. it made a world of difference!

this is fun, isn't it? i'm learning so much and having a great time! AND making new friends which makes it even better.

when you made your suggestions, is this what you had in mind?

should i do the same in the middle photo? would you extend the teal color out a little? can you see the pink i added around K between her arms and body and a little off the bottom to the left of her dress? i don't want to do too much because i don't want to overdo it. better to add later if it's lacking.

what about the hair? should it be blended in a little? what color should i use? matching that color might be pretty hard...

thanks for the input. when i get my snippets i will work on these things. (the snippets have actually been good... looking at it as a positve thing has helped me step back and slow down.) J goes out of town tomorrow for a week so i will either have a lot of time or none at all! (hopefully a lot!)

the hair kind of freaks me out a bit! any suggestions on what colors to mix to start with? i think once i get started i'll be ok, but not sure where to start...

thanks again for the support. i know i tell you this a lot, but i'll tell you again. i'm loving this class! thanks for offering it. you are doing very well teaching 'virtually'... that can't be easy!

This is to all of you who have posted work in the past day or two. I think you are all doing fabulous work. I have admiration for you since I seem unable to do this. I have decided I want to start over from scratch and try again. But I'll have to wait for the weekend when I can go buy more canvas.

oh, wish i could just pop by and give you one of mine... i bought extra in case i hated what i was doing! plus i noticed that these seem very popular around here. michael's always seems to be running out of them!

i'm so excited that you decided to start again. i was afraid you would just say enough is enough. you CAN do it!

will you be using the same photo? maybe using a photo you like, but don't have so much invested in may be a bit easier for you?

looks good- I like what you are doing with extending the colors softly from the photos out into the background. Neat leaf stamps! They remind me of the fluffy part of grain or wheat stalks. I like them a lot.

thank you! Jacqueline suggested extending the colors. what a difference it makes. i'm very excited about these.

thank you about the stamps! they are supposed to resemble wheat! woo hoo!!! i carved them because i didn't really see any in the store that struck my fancy. besides it's so much fun! i had all the stuff, but had never gotten around to carving any. what was i waiting for?!!! (see my reply to Michelle about why i wanted the wheat.)

That's what I thought! And I also thought that perhaps you were using wheat to bring about a reference to your childhood growing up on a farm. I don't know what you all grew on the farm, but that's what I thought. And I thought how that was nice- bringing your past childhood into your children's portraits. Perhaps your own experiences/history embracing your children's present and future.

haha! Can you tell that I was pretty good at writing art history papers!!?! I enjoy looking for meaning...although I'm probably totally off base most of the time! lol :)

you know, you are probably right there... i'm finding i'm very nostalgic about the farm lately. especially since G-man keeps asking to go to the farm every other day. (he just doesn't understand that it takes 12 hours to drive there!) being a farmer's daughter is so much of who i am (and who i'm not!) that it's bound to creep into my art. especially when i'm doing something like this!

you're very observant!
