Part 1: We Will Be Best Friends Forever
“Hyukkie~” Donghae whines, approaching her bestfriend Hyukjae and shaking his arm childishly.
“Yes, Hae... What’s wrong?” Hyukjae responds her patiently, putting down the book which he’s currently reading.
“They took my fish pen! The one you bought me at the school festival last month! Hyukkie, go punch them~” She keeps whining, because of her beloved fish pen has been taken from her.
“Who took your fish pen?!” Hyukjae acts like a hero, lifting his sleeves and gritting his teeth. His eyes wanders the class room to find the giggling voices. He actually can guess who they are. It always happens everytime. Donghae always become a victim of their teasing, being a childish and crybaby girl she is.
“It’s Kyuhyun! And Sungmin too~ Go get and punch them, Hyukkie~”
“Of course, who else, huh? Where are they? I’ll go get them!” Hyukjae still search the source of the giggling voice. But Donghae answer him.
“They ran outside!” Their giggles actually can be heard from the corridor. Hyukjae immediately go outside and approach the giggling couple.
“Give. It. Back. Now!” He emphasizes each words, glaring at them. Sungmin immediately go behind Kyuhyun’s body, only popping out her head behind his shoulder and pretending that she’s scared of Hyukjae’s warning. And Kyuhyun hides his hands at his back.
“Or else...?” Kyuhyun asks back challengingly, smirking his famous evil smirk. Donghae is just watching the scene, sticking out her tongue to the partner in crime. But unknowingly, Kyuhyun hands the fish pen to Sungmin. Sungmin immediately back off slowly when Hyukjae’s trying to catch Kyuhyun’s hands. Hyukjae knows he failed as Kyuhyun raises his hands above his head victoriously, and Sungmin runs away. He knows now Sungmin is the one who take away the fish pen.
But Sungmin can’t run anywhere else, as Hyukjae quickly run after her and grab her wrist. “Gotcha!” But Hyukjae’s perfect jaw drops immediately when Sungmin as fast as she can, throws the fish pen back to Kyuhyun. Then he easily catches it with his right hand, grinning like mad.
“It’s here, Hyuk!” Kyuhyun smirks.
“But your girlfriend is with me! Ha!” Hyukjae smirks back to him, still clutching Sungmin’s hand. Then he turns to Donghae, “Hae, save yourself!”. Donghae then run to the group of students who are currently having a chat about new gossips in their school. Hyukjae know that Kyuhyun wouldn’t win if his beloved girlfriend get involved.
“Aish! Okay, you win again! Let go of her!” Kyuhyun gives up easily, being overprotective boyfriend he is to Sungmin. He immediately approaches them, giving back the fish pen to Hyukjae and taking back his girlfriend. “Are you okay, baby?” Kyuhyun asks his girlfriend concernedly. Hyukjae just chuckle loudly seeing the lovey-dovey scene, and go to Donghae who’s smiling like a fish right now.
“I’m sorry, Kyuhyunnie... I’ve failed~” Sungmin feels that she has failed in their teasing mission.
“It’s okay, baby... It’s not your fault. We’ll do it next time, ne?” Kyuhyun whispers the last sentence and hugs her, cheering her up.
Meanwhile, Donghae runs to Hyukjae who smiles his gummy smile at her. He gives the fish pen back to her then slung one arm to her shoulder. “Here! Next time, you have to be careful. What if i weren’t there when they tease you again?” Hyukjae pinches her nose, making Donghae pouts. “It hurts~” Hyukjae laughs wholeheartedly.
“Did you just say that you’re going to leave me, Hyukkie?” Donghae pouts even more, suddenly feeling worried inside.
“Of course not, Hae... I won’t leave you. Never. We will be bestfriend forever!” He flash her his gummy smile again, and ruffles her hair lovingly. And it makes Donghae blush and feel nervous without knowing the reason.
That was their first year in High School. Lee Hyukjae knew Lee Donghae when they shared the same seat in their class. Behind their seat, there were also a girl and a boy, namely Lee Sungmin and Cho Kyuhyun. It was not that hard to make them four became close friends. Hyukjae and Donghae got along well with each other. They share same hobby, dancing. But their relationship never beyond that. Even though their classmates usually thought they are an item, but they never gave a damn. Hyukjae always treated her as his own dongsaeng. He cares about Donghae so much. And Donghae always like him that way.
But different story happened to Sungmin and Kyuhyun. As times passed by, days by days, they realized that they had the same feeling towards each other. Of course they easily got along each other well, because they have a lot of things in common. They like singing and playing piano. So much times they spent together. Until finally they shared their first kiss on their way to Sungmin’s house after school hours when Kyuhyun walked her home. Wasn’t that cute?
In fact, Hyukjae and Sungmin have known each other since Elementary school. But they’ve never be as close as now in High School. Their friendship finally take the four of them together. Being a childish and crybaby she is, Donghae always become the object of Kyuhyun and Sungmin teasing and pranks. They know how to play with Donghae. But Hyukjae will always be there to protect her.
Together, they always having lunch, hanging out, studying, doing their papers together. Even until they have to separate in second grade, they still spend a lot of times together. It never changed. At least, not until some certain third party come into their friendship.

“Why are you smiling like a fool to yourself, Hyukkie?” Donghae asks her bestfriend, narrowing her eyes curiously. Hyukjae just arrive at their usual seats in school cafetaria, with a bright smile on his face. Kyuhyun and Sungmin who currently are feeding each other, look up to see the evident on Hyukjae’s face.
“Stupid monkey.” Kyuhyun mocks plainly.
“What are you thinking, Hyuk?” Sungmin also asks her childhood friend worriedly as if he’s indeed going to become stupid monkey.
“I think i like that new student.” Hyukjae says cheerfully, making Donghae chokes of her food.
“WHAT?!?” She put down her chopsticks loudly. “You just knew her for three hours, but you already can say you like her?! How come--” She can’t control her tone, until Hyukjae has to put his palm on her mouth. “Sssshh! Can you calm down, Hae?”
“Sorry~” She appologize when Hyukjae finally release her. Sungmin just laugh at her bestfriends’ attitude, while Kyuhyun’s only smirking.
“She just came to me and asked me about the last lesson that she was left behind. You know~? You can’t complain when you are the smartest student in your class...” He says proudly. The three bestfriends just roll their eyes in disbelief. “And then we talked a little, until i saw her smiling. Her eyes-smile was so mesmerizing... I couldn’t help it~” He narrates his story, spacing out and smiling like a madman.
Meanwhile, Donghae seems faking a smile. She feels weird inside her heart. And Sungmin, being a close bestfriend to her, can notice it.

“Hae, guess what?” Hyukjae comes to his bestfriend’s class. Although they are not a classmates anymore, they still always visit each other if that’s needed.
“What?” Donghae look up to him and raises an eyebrow, seeing weird the older’s attitude.
“I’m going to have a date with her this Saturday!” He says happily. Donghae only can stare at him, losing words.
“Who is ‘her’, anyway?” She tries so hard to hide her disappointment. Of course, she already knew who he was talking about. And since Sungmin already has Kyuhyun, who else is going to accompany her from now on? She knows that she’s going to be left behind again.
“Hara! Goo Hara! Who else?” He practically jumps when mention her name.
Donghae just give him a smile and support. “It’s good, then. Good luck for you, Hyukkie!”
Donghae frowns now after Hyukjae leave her class room. Why am i feeling like this? He is my best friend. Why do i feel so hurt to see him with other girl?
That day, Donghae can’t concentrate to her study at all. At the break time, she can’t eat properly. She keeps playing with her chopsticks, making her beef teriyaki being ignored. But she herself doesn’t know the reason why she’s acting like that. She only know that she feels so lonely, despite of her bestfriends are there too.
“Hae... you practically don’t eat at all. Are you okay?” Hyukjae’s question succeeds to make her back to reality. Well, actually it’s more to his touch on her forehead which snap out of her dreamworld.
“I’m okay, Hyukkie... it’s just.. school problem. I have a lot of homeworks and papers to do. I don’t know which one i should finish first.” She obviously lies, but Hyukjae doesn’t notice it.
Only Sungmin can read it through her face. In fact, she is the one who always have a bestfriend instinct. Well, she’s a girl too. She can feel there’s something wrong with Donghae’s sudden silence.
Sungmin eyes the two bestfriends in front of her in worried, ignoring Kyuhyun’s babble about him leveling up in starcraft. It must be something beyond school problems, she thinks.
On the way home, Donghae is still in her silence. “You look so pale, Hae. And look, you get fever!” Hyukjae exclaims worriedly after touch her face. He immediately put his jacket on Donghae’s body. “I think you’re ill, Hae. You should get rest.” Donghae doesn't know why, but when Hyukjae acts so sweet and caring, she become so nervous and uneasy to be near him.
Donghae smiles at him. Hyukjae is still worried and caring about her after all. She’s really thankful about it. “I don’t know, Hyukkie... I just feel not good. Maybe you’re right, i have to get a proper rest. Thanks for the jacket, by the way.”
I’m happy that you still care about me, Hae. But do you know it makes me feel confused at the same time? Why do you still care about me when you already have her? Why don’t you just go to her and don’t mind me?

A/N: this idea just popped in my head so suddenly when i wrote Take Me Away. In fact, i miss writing Eunhae. Sorry, if you don't like genderswitch!Eunhae, but i can't help it, i love genderswitch.
