She had already ordered a new drive, so she hopes to be back up by Wednesday or Thursday.

Seems the answer was 'failing hard disk' rather than overheat.

Yeah, my diagnosis failed :(

I've never known a faulty hard disk cause a lag before though. Guess you learn something new every day
