[You can just about make out... nothing, until something flips the communicator over onto the floor and you can see it was lying face-down on the desk. From a distance comes a startled "Oh!" Then a pair of red Mary Janes appear, complete with orange knee socks on under them.

Velma mutters to herself:] Jinkies, this is unusual.

[She picks up the ( Read more... )

[Oh, boy, a scientist!] Hello! I'm Omega.

Hi! Uh, how do you do?

Never better. [a.k.a. worn out, hungry and irritable due to black out and cannibalism but that's a little unfair to strangers.] You seem upbeat.

I'm starting to get the feeling that upbeat's not the general attitude around here. [She went and read some recent entries. She wouldn't blame anyone for being irritable.]

Welcome aboard, I'm afraid you've come at a bit of an odd time. I'm Martha, Martha Jones a fellow warden here and head of the infirmary.

So I'm gathering. It's good to meet you, even if my timing is somewhat inopportune.

Are things around here often so... complicated?

thegooddrjones November 20 2010, 22:27:55 UTC
Well, they're always complicated, but right now doubly so.

I read the incident report that was posted recently. Power outages and people eating other people? It kind of makes the whole thing less, uh, glamorous, I guess.

I've taken a lot of notes myself! The barge is such a fascinating place, and I think most of the areas on the barge are actually simulations generated by Block Transfer Computations. Recently when the power went out, our rooms turned into blank, identical rooms, and I think they actually are still the rooms we saw before, but we have...what's essentially a hard hologram projected into where we perceive as our rooms to make us more comfortable.

And then, of course, it's interesting studying how we're able to move through time and dimension without damaging the time-space continuum. I wrote a bunch of data trying to explain that. [Adric holds up a page of fancy, sci-fi maths that's all correct.]

That's an interesting theory. [She sounds SO INCREDIBLY FASCINATED.] The idea of advanced computer generated technology dictating what is or isn't reality would be difficult to prove conclusively without finding the source and method of projection, but it could well be worth looking into.

I'd love to take a good look at your notes some time.

Of course, and that sort of thing would be very difficult to find if the user didn't want it to be found, since if it can generate all the things in our rooms, it can certainly disguise itself. But it's still a very interesting theory to study.

All right, I can share them, although I can't guarantee you can follow them. They're very advanced.

I can usually handle myself in the academic arena.

There is a lab. You may be able to use the space to pursue that study.

There is? That's wonderful! Do I need to talk to someone about making that official? How does that sort of thing work around here?

with_discipline November 21 2010, 02:32:25 UTC
Those of us who use it tend to organize our time their ourselves; usually, there is space for us to work at once.

Sign me up! I would love to access to the space and equipment necessary to study the various mechanisms at work here.
