What a busy weekend

Yesterday, we voted. Every time I vote, I do so with a grin on my face-I know that half the population of the world does not have that privilige, and even though by election day I was thoroughly fed up with being bombarded by election advertising, it is wonderful to be part of the process. It sounds like it was a wonderful day.

I almost feel bad for John Howard, losing his own Parliament seat....but I'm sure he will eagerly dive into the private sector.

I watched a video of the new PM giving a speech a few months ago - he seems like he has good liberal (our liberal, not John Howard's "Liberal") credentials. My fingers are crossed for you guys.

John Howard will probably pick up a few directorships, but he is in his late 60s and his parliamentary pension is about $350,000 pa, so retirement looks like a good option - he won't starve. Plus he gets up to 40 trips per year each to anywhere in the country for him and his wife. Former politicians often find it difficult to give up the power, even if they are financially fine-it might be easier in the US system where the president knows he only has the job for a maximum of 8 years-here they go on until either they lose the election or the party kicks them out, and when one of those happens, he is often not ready ( ... )
