Honestly, yeah. I mean, Natalie shined in both films. Her work in Garden State was just amazing, completely utterly and totally...and then Closer just blew my mind. Don't misunderstand me, if she won, I'd be estatic out of my mind...
...but there's something in Virginia Madsen's performance. When watching it, it felt authentic. Real. A fully lived-in character, which you don't get much these days. Every time she is on screen, she is subtle perfection...her speech about wine is one of the best scenes of this year. She did so perfectly with this character that just...I don't know...there's pure magic in this performance. And even that beats two of the best performances of last year from Ms. Portman.
