Looking for advice about elementary schools

Jan 14, 2009 14:53

So let's pretend that I am going to be able to move my family into Ann Arbor. Which elementary school district should we be trying to move into? Which district should we avoid?

Is it more important to be angling for the right middle school or high school?

If qrssama doesn't respond here soon, send her email.

Also, Saline schools are better than Ann Arbor schools - that's part of why we ended up here.

I've heard that about Saline schools, but I haven't heard how? Better MEAP scores? More opportunities?

In case this misses her, could you forward her email?

1) before moving, talk to someone at the ISD about Washtenaw's schools of choice program. It is my understanding that you can send your kid to any school in Washtenaw county so long as you deal with the transportation. But I'm not positive, so a conversation would be useful. The person you want is Geraldine Allen ( ... )

First, thanks for the detailed response. I really appreciate the contact names and numbers.

I have a few followup questions:

How would I know if I need gifted and talented? I think K is advanced for her age, but I'm sure I'm biased.

Is there a tangible difference in art or drama programs?

Is Ann Arbor's sports program better because it has a larger variety of options or better results/facilities?

Do you know anything about how charter school work/compare to Saline and Ann Arbor?

1) There are basically two ways that people find out that their kids are gifted and talented (G&T). The most common is that the pre-k or preschool teacher tells the parent that something is unusual relative to the other kids she sees. The second is through testing. Pam should be able to talk to you about local testing services, but it is also true that you can request your kid get into a program and then see if she does well or not. But if you do that, be very aware of how things are really going, not how you would *like* them to be. A child who isn't happy in a G&T program is worse off than a talented child who isn't ( ... )
