Creative Potential

I was coloring with my little sister in a coloring book, and I formed this theory that enforcing children to color within the lines is restricting their artistic and otherwise creative potential.  Think about it, when you're younger, your taught that prettier pictures are made when you color inside of the lines.  In doing that, all you have to set ( Read more... )

I find beauty in symmetry. When you color within the lines of the picture, you are learning basic art techniques. If you don't learn the basic rules then you'll never be able to break them without looking foolish.

For example, say you have a coloring page. Which do you believe would win an award, the page that is colored within the lines, or the page that is colored with depth and precision within the boundaries set?

Personally, I am going for number two. Boundaries are a bad thing for children, but you have to know what you're not conforming too you know? Its all well and good to go and create beautiful, original pieces of art, however, by using other techniques it gives your work merit.

Just like using grammar in a work of prose.

Maybe, but I've found kids take pleasure in colourin foutside the lines anyway, and much like adults, delight in giving the picture wacky colours!
