I sold all my 45s and 33s at a car boot sale many years ago. Didn't have a working record player so practicality outweighed sentimentality on that occasion.
And agreed, re missing albums. Those couple of seconds after the needle touched a new album, and you heard the scratching hum before the music kicked in were such an intensely anticipatory moment; suspended between familiar white noise and new sound...
And we didn't have weeks of the song being debuted on the radio or the video being played on to death on TV. A new record meant just that. Good album artwork is a thing of the past too.
