Not even a note, he thinks bitterly, but he knows. He will always be second to her, and he hates it, being second to someone he places first, and yet he’ll take it, even if it’s all he’ll ever be, because he’s too tired to hold on, but too in love to let go.

But somehow, he was the only one who tried and stuck by her through it all, and she was the only one who bothered to break through the surface, and somewhere along the way, they fell in love.

His lips are quivering as he connects his lips to hers, hands running through her soft tendrils, gentle and delicate, with an underlying sense of urgency and hesitation. His shirt is soaked and his eyes are red and puffy (while Krystal still looks pretty as usual, his porcelain doll) but she disregards everything else but the fact that he’s back, that through it all, Jonghyun has finally realised that he just can’t leave her. “I love you, Soojung,” he murmurs, “and I can’t love anyone else. It has been you, it is you, and will always be you.”

Celebrations proceed all around them and amidst the flurry of activity and buzz of conversation, Yesung watches on sorely as Onew wraps an arm protectively around Yuri, the curl of his lean fingers feathery light upon the exposed skin of her abdomen, lips at her cheek affectionately and somewhat possessively. There is the regret that Yesung always feels; every time he looks at her he is painfully reminded that if he’d held on a little tighter back then, things would never have ended up this way.
