“I take it you forgive me then,” he whispers, but it’s more like a coo really, given the softness and tenderness of his voice, his too-muscular arms wrapped affectionately around her too-thin waist.
Everything fits perfectly, she can’t help but think. Just like before.
“No way,” she shakes her head, grinning playfully and brushing their noses together, “I’m not letting you off the hook so easily.”
Jonghyun chuckles, a genuine smile crossing his face, lips curving upwards. She recognises it, the smile. A familiar tingling sensation runs up her spine and she shivers at the sudden rush of memories to her head, vivid pictures sending her head spinning. His eyebrows raise inquisitively and his head slants to the side, hair falling along with it, hiding his big and bright eyes, curious and questioning.
She shakes her head a second time and detaches herself from him, much to his surprise. His heart is thumping with anticipation, waiting with a bated breath. With Jessica, nothing was ever boring.
She hasn’t changed, he can’t help but think. Just like before.
She interlaces their fingers together, grip tight and firm and all kinds of possessive. He’s not used to this affectionate side of her, but it’s been a while so he doesn’t feel like he knows anything anymore.
So he just smiles, swallowing somewhat uncomfortably. Not knowing what’s coming makes him a little jittery and unsettled, to tell the truth.
“First order of business,” she announces, walking out into the carpeted hallway and pulling his stunned self along with her, “is telling everyone that you’re mine.”
Almost the entire family is gathered somewhere along the hall in groups and cliques, but the conversations grow quiet and the smiles grow wider as Jonghyun lifts their hands up as high as they can go.
“This girl is mine, and I am hers. Anyone who dares to lay a finger on her will be personally dealt with by yours truly.”
There is a moment of shocked silence.
Then everyone erupts in cheers and whoops and yelled congratulations, but everything fades away apart from the subtle warmth that grows in their hearts, an electrifying feeling that no doubt scares her, but the pure joy together with it is so wonderful and everything just fits together again like a retold fairytale.
People start surrounding them but Jonghyun doesn’t care, picking her up into his arms once more and spinning her around, connecting their lips softly, his smile pressing delicately against her mouth.
The words “I love you” can barely be heard over the commotion but she reads his lips and her heart swells even more as she whispers the words back, with every ounce of feeling in her.
Yes, it’s been a while.
Yes, Jonghyun regrets.
Yes, Jessica still aches.
But the promises made from before have never been broken and the secret stolen glances, the hidden smiles and the overwhelming feelings have restored every bit of their story and closed every gap along the way.
Besides, it’s never too late for new beginnings.
