Character Background: Kuhn's real name is Tomonari Kasumi, and he began playing the World when he was 17. He convinced his first and only serious girlfriend to play with him. But while playing, was attacked by Skeith and fell into a coma. After recovering, he continued to play The World. His girlfriend, Mai, later breaks up with him for being immature.
Kasumi created the character Kuhn sometime between that and the beginning of Vol. 1 of .hack//GU. It had been seven years since the events in R:1. At 24, Kasumi was no longer in school, instead having a part time job at an arcade and another at CC Corp. Kuhn is an Epitaph user, a user who has an Avatar. And being the second character to awaken his, he has almost complete control over it.
Kuhn is first seen in Vol. 1 rescuing Haseo and Atoli from an AIDA using his Avatar, Magus. This makes Haseo realize the existence of Avatars, and subsequently Kuhn ends up bringing Haseo to Yata and being paired with Pi in order to help Haseo release his Avatar. Haseo failed and didn't end up awakening it until his tournament fight with Bordeaux, in which he used it against her.
Using an Avatar against an innocent player angered Kuhn, and he tried to tell Haseo why he shouldn't use his Avatar so recklessly. Haseo didn't take him seriously. Now, Kuhn and Pi had already entered the tournament as part of a mission from Yata to investigate Endrance. So when Kuhn and Haseo are put face to face in a tournament battle, Kuhn decided to teach Haseo a meaningful lesson.
It quickly turned into an Avatar fight between Kuhn and Haseo (Magus and Skeith). During the fight, Haseo got angry and let Skeith take over. He was forced to watch in horror as Skeith pulverized 'Kuhn'.
After it was all over, Kuhn revealed that he was perfectly fine. He had used his Avatar's special technique called Propagation, which is the replication of data. He promptly resigned from the match, his mission complete.
Abilities/Special Powers: Kuhn is an Epitaph user. This means he can summon an Avatar. And in Kuhn's case, this means Magus. Being the second character to awaken his Avatar, Kuhn is in almost complete control of Magus (or 'my Magus' as he affectionately calls it). Magus's special technique is Propagation, or the art of data replication.
Third-Person Sample:
Kuhn smiled at Haseo. By the look on the adept rogue's face, the blue haired man knew Haseo had learned his lesson. At least, as well as the other man probably could or ever would.
That was the last thing Kuhn remembered before his screen went black. At first, he'd thought it was his computer. With a sigh of what was probably only half-hearted disappointment, he tried to remove his M2D. He was still in a great mood, regardless. After all, he'd just successfully gotten through to Haseo of all people.
Kuhn opened his eyes. And promptly blinked several times. Huh? He was on the floor. As soon as he sat up, he stared down a long hallway that was definitely not part of his apartment. Kuhn scratched his head, not bothering to lift himself off the floor just yet. His hair was swept back, and when his gloved (huh? gloved?) hand felt the scarf in his hair he froze.
His eyes dropped to his feet and then it hit him. He was still his PC... still 'Kuhn'. Kuhn held his hands out before him, flipping them around and examining them. A grin spread across his face and he let out a chuckle. He had no idea what exactly was going on, but somehow being in his PC made feel that much more confident. It was as if as long as he had his character he could practically take on anything.
The blue-haired man finally pushed himself to his feet, planting his fists on his hips as he surveyed the area. Huh, how weird. It felt so real, but it obviously wasn't, nor was he completely certain that he was even still logged in. Kuhn scratched his head again, he really had no clue what to do at this point. It was like some sort of limbo between "The World" and real life. He wasn't exactly worried, as he was still confident that he could handle whatever was happening here, but it sure was confusing.
Then he noticed a weight on his hip. Kuhn pulled the electronic device out. He recognized it immediately as some sort of PDA and smiled broadly. Man, hopefully this meant there were other people out there. And with any luck, someone he knew... or maybe some lovely ladies.

Hey guys! I know there's gotta be someone online out there.
So uh, could one of you tell me what's going on?
This some kinda event? Funny, never had to use something like this in game before.
It's just Weird, you know?

[[ His voice is farther away for a moment, as if he's taken the PDA away from his mouth and muttered to himself. You can just tell he's scratching the back of his head in exasperation. ]]
