Brief impression of Elementary Pilot - S1x01

I'm no sure when the show Elementary will be premiering, but I managed a sneak peek of the Pilot, thanks to a link at ONTD. Unfortunately, when I wanted to watch it a second time round - because I was slightly distracted at one point of the episode - it's already been removed. Ugh.

So I'm notreally going to spoil anyone who's going to watch it, in ( Read more... )

This show is something that I will watch, but it's not something that I will be mad over, I think, unless something changes. It's so similar to ther procedural cop shows, and there are shades of The Mentalist (which incidentally is also produced by CBS) and Bones in it, that it doesn't feel particularly special, just pleasing. Subsitute the names Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson with any other original names and the show will work too, because it's that different from the original source, which leads me to question, why use those names if not to bank in on the popularity of the movies and the BBC series? This is how I feel about it too. It's got some good qualities, but from what I've seen it's not necessarily REALLY Sherlock Holmes and Watson. It's "Rogue Detective and Audience-Surrogate Assistant" - and the stories themselves aren't even based on Sherlock Holmes stories like BBC did ( ... )

Yes, exactly. And I read somewhere that the writers are only basing the series loosely on Sherlock, so why use the names if that's so? I think that Psych is also loosely based on Sherlock, as is The Mentalist and Bones, and House, and they used different names and all, so what is one more?

It just annoys me.

Yeah, it's not a new idea, it's rehashing the same old formula they use every year in an attempt to launch a new crime-procedural.

Which isn't to say there aren't good things about it, but if you aren't even going to stay true to origin of where you got your character names, why even use those character names.

So, yeah, it looks like a good show, but I'm just as likely to watch it as I am The Mentalists (ie: not very likely), because it's not offering me anything that I can't get from other shows - besides perhaps a more diverse cast and cool non-sexual male-female friendship (though, I'm kind of cynical and I assume they'll eventually ruin that too).
