Fortune or fortunate?

Do you think that the fortunes that you find in fortune cookies only apply to you if you eat the cookie and you were the first person to see that fortune? I wonder this because I am doing laundry tonight and I went down to the laundry room and while I was loading the washer I saw a scrap of paper on the floor and realized it was a fortune strip
