Memorials of death

It all started about 10-15 years ago, and it's growing out of control. I'm talking about roadside memorials to dead people. I've never had a loved one die in a car accident, friends yes, but not love ones. So I can't imagine what it's like. But, to me it seems it would be bad enough to know that the person died in a spot without having to ( Read more... )

Actually, I kinda like those.

Aside from my general favoring of anything that's gaudy and over-the-top, they are one of the few things that break up the roadside scenery that isn't either erected by the highway department or some corporation. And they serve as an excellent reminder to people of the consequences of driving like a moron.

There's one on Route 9 in Somers Point that's huge. There's a portrait of a young man in the center, and it's surrounded by crosses, flowers, candles, and whatever other tchotskes they could find to throw in.

It's strange that you mention that, because there is a solar-powered memorial. As a matter of fact, the sun-powered glowing angel heart was such a distraction that residents asked to take it down.
