First off...wash and dry your hands! Don't use bathroom soap but washing up liquid. Alternatively wear latex gloves. Contaminants like old, dried, or less effective thermal paste or finger oils can reduce the ffectiveness of your new paste. Lint, hair and dust can reduce surface contact and adversely affect heat transfer.

To clean off thermal paste, i always use isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth. When reapplying thermal paste, i use Arctic Siver and NO MORE than the size of a grain of rice!

Then reapply the HS/fan squarely on the CPU... be very careful that you don't crack the core on top of the chip!

As for fans, i'd have Zalman over Coolermaster anyday! :p

Ta. New fan would have the usual layer of its own paste anyway - so I wouldn't need to worry about doing it myself. ;)

Unless, of course, you feel up to comin' across and givin' me a hand in return for I dunno... some alcohol? I don't, for one, have any isopropyl (and wouldn't suggest drinking it either, heh - I'm fairly sure Jonesy's had a drink or two... and that's enough to prove to anyone that it's a bad idea. ;P)

Zalman? Whyfor? :)

The thermal layer on most new fans isn't up to the job so i tend to clean it off and apply my own... much better! :p

I would come over and help you out but i'm getting ready for work at the moment (unless it comes before 1pm)! Changing a heatsink is easy-peasy!

Zalman are much quieter and provide better cooling than Coolermaster i reckon... :)

Oh, and enjoy getting the HS off the CPU in the first place! It's always a bastard to remove the HS once it's been bonded onto the CPU... :/

Indeed. :)

Only thing I've been warned about is that MSI have on-board fuses (!!!). So.. need to be VERY careful about hotswapping kbd/mouse (which I don't do anyway - and my mouse is USB, regardless).
