My mama, who enjoyed her college French classes, used to say this to me sometimes. It's an apology (right?), but it keeps running through my mind this week--as I watch CNN, read the paper, and try to fall asleep at night--with a more literal meaning: I am desolate.

I know just how you feel. It's hard to shake this sick feeling. And why should we? We just have to be sure it doesn't knock us asunder so we can't function. And remember, all those little souls floated up into God's arms. Who knows how many of the big ones did too? They left all the misery behind.
