Confess & Forsake

Pipes got me an iPod, just a few days before our wedding. A nice, 80 gig Classic, with video and the whole shebang. It's inscribed on the back with the message, "I'm the Luckiest". (A reference to our song) She almost got me the iPod Touch, but those piddly little 16-gig devices just wouldn't have anything close to the capacity needed for my music ( Read more... )

Don't beat yourself up too bad. Shit happens. I would have reacted in the same way, it's hard to be mad at someone who made a mistake with such enthusiasm :-) Also, it's not as if that money is completey thrown away, those songs will bring you joy for a long time. But then, I'll always have a soft spot for people who spend too much on movies, books and music. They are my kind of people.

True... it's something I can continue to enjoy. It doesn't disappear, like an ice-cream cone. But it's still a... I was about to say "material possession", but it's really an "immaterial possession". It doesn't have any more substance than as some magnetized digits on my hard-drive. I'm mainly just mad at myself for letting it get out of hand, and hurting our finances (albeit, temporarily) in the process.

And yes, I do love good books, good movies and good music. I've given up on watching TV anymore, but I have a HUGE -- multiple bookcases full -- collection of DVDs. When I used to participate in singles sites, I avoided the standard, "long walks on the beach" cruft to fully admit my obsession with good stories and good entertainment.

*sigh* I can still let the beast out... I just have to keep him on a short leash. ;-)

Same here on the tv and DVDs. When I used to i-Date, my strategy was to semi-hide a reference to one of my favorite obscure tv shows, like Babylon 5 or Firefly - I figured if someone responded to that, he must be my kind of guy.

Of course, I've ended up with a guy who'd never heard of any of that before, such is the world of match.com. You just never know.

Ban yourself from buying any more iTunes media until you have purchased the half-Terrabyte hard disc that you will need to store all of that stuff. That broke the habit for me; I still make the occasional purchase there but on a much more contained scale.

On the 1st Anniversary of iTunes' unveiling, Steve Jobs happened to be expounded some of the successes of the store. He touted how many songs had been downloaded, what percentage of the downloaded-music market share it had already captured, and for grins he mentioned that the single highest purchaser had spent $31,000 at the iTMS during that year(!) "But we won't mention his name," Jobs deadpanned, "just in case his parents are watching this...!"

Funny stuff, even though thirty grand in music debt is nothing to be too giggly about.

No kidding. And, it's amazing to discover a weakness like this within myself, when I thought I was possessed of more self-control than that.

Within the last couple of weeks, Jobs has unveiled Genius™. Heh! That could be the death of me, if I am not careful. "So you like this song... here are the other good songs you're missing from this artist, and here are others like it!"

I think I will be giving myself an allowance of X songs per week or month, beginning in October or November. We'll see, though.

To help curb your habit: try mininova.org
It's free. There's new stuff added all the time. Did I mention it's free?
Oh, if you're a Joss Whedon fan, have you SEEN Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog yet?
Very very funny. And it has Nathan Fillion from Firefly in it.

No, but I've been wanting to go download it. I'm not giving myself an allowance for iTunes until at least October or November, though...

hehe I used to use Ares Ultra (I haven't put it on my new computer, but I still have it on the old one). I paid a one time fee to download the program and then I started downloading to my heart's content. Philip's opinion is that I'm stealing music, but I originally found out about it from my aunt, who was given a 30 day free trial when she bought her new computer. If it's illegal, why would they put the software on your computer when you buy it?

Anyway, you can check it out if you want. http://aresultra.com/?hop=clickcb

And here's a site with reviews for it:

Interesting... though I wonder if they have a version available for the Mac.

Thanks for the info. I may follow-up on it.

You know, there are oftentimes sweepstakes where you can win iTunes gift cards. :)
