My Junior year in nursing school found me away from home for the longest period in my life up to that point. It was one of the most challenging yet rewarding times that I remember.

This is such a sad and interesting realization - how neat to call back to the days when you were just beginning, and what a sad lesson.

I really liked reading this-- well written, natch... and though it was long ago, it reminded me of a lot of stories my wife tells me of taking on the same job in more modern times. She's been talking about moving from ICU to NICU... I keep telling her she'd get situations like *this*, and they're a lot more heartbreaking.

NICU would have some sad outcomes but, by far, more happy ones. They can do such amazing things these days!

I make quilts for Project Linus and many of our donated blankies go to the NICU at our local medical center, so we hear back about some real heart-warming miracles.
