I encounter beggars a lot, even just on my commute to work, and I'm always torn about what to do. Thanks for taking time to reflect on this. It's good food for thought.

There are no easy answers to this or so many other social issues. Thinking about them is at least better than ignoring them, I expect.
Thank you for reading.

I have very strong opinions on giving to street people, and I do so regularly, and amazingly enough recently that worked in my favour, when I lost my wallet downtown during rush hour last week it was a street person who turned it over to the police, and they returned it to me, with every penny and credit card untouched, somewhat remarkable for me who seems to have to worst luck ever, but it makes me grateful for the kindness of people who seem to receive so much more negative attention than positive.

That said, I really enjoyed this piece, you approached the topic without prejudice and that's difficult to do, as we all have our own biases.

Thank you for reading and sharing this wonderful story of your own. I'm so happy you got your wallet back. So many good people have just fallen on hard times. Kindness begets kindness, I think.

It's neat to read this perspective. I don't give to panhandlers, but I do local charity work when I can, and I give to every street performer regardless of talent :)

Generosity finds many homes. It would be natural for you to support performers. I'd really be surprised, otherwise! Thanks for reading.

Money for a beggar. anonymous June 16 2013, 13:14:57 UTC
I was touched by this story. Hunger is the price we are paying for a corrupt society the robs from the poor (unnecessary taxation)and gives to the rich. There was a recent bid for an increase of the minimum wage to $9.25 per hour. It was shot down in Congress by folks who will never know hunger.
God bless those who give a handout to a stranger. Remember it is also a hand up from your guardian angel.
