1.

it had stopped raining and the grey clouds disappeared, making room for the warm yellow sun.

a lifeless form laid sprawled out in the open between the two cages.

kate sat locked in sawyer's cage, her back turned to him, watching tree branches high above the cage.

the sun had dried her clothes and her brown hair was in tangles.

she turned around gripping the bars with her hands and watched him. he laid in the same position where pickett had left him.

his clothes were covered in dust and mud and his face and hair in dried blood.

"sawyer," she called out to him, trying just one more time. her voice was hoarse.

"please, wake up."

he continued to lay there motionless.

"sawyer," she begged. "i hate you. i told you not to give up. so get up, now. you hear me?"

there was no reaction.

her cries were quiet desperate howls as she began to accept what had happened.

the sun was setting when juliet walked to the cages with two men who lifted sawyer up by his hands and feet and finally carried him away.

kate's tired bloodshot eyes followed him until he was gone.

"i'm sorry for your loss," juliet said.

2.

darkness had fallen when she returned.

"come on,"juliet unlocked the door and led kate out of the cage.

when the blindfold covering her eyes was removed, she stood in a clinically white hospital room. sawyer laid on a gurney in the middle of the room.

she walked to him.

they had washed him and sewed his wounds.

he looked peaceful, more peaceful than ever even in his sleep and the finality of it all hit her like a wave. she had to look away because she couldn't bear looking at the sight.

she gathered herself and turned to juliet.

"i want him buried at our beach."

"you know that's impossible, kate."

she turned back to sawyer's body and ran her fingertips over his palm. the coldness of his skin made a lump rise in her throat.

"i'm sorry," she mouthed to him before juliet walked her away and back to the cage again.

"we'll bury him in our cemetary," she told her. "it's a beautiful place near the oceon. we'll let you visit there."

kate remained unspoken until juliet was leaving, then she called her back.

"juliet."

"yes?"

juliet walked up to her so that they were standing face to face, only the bars of the cage seperating them.

"is there anything i can do for you?" juliet asked gently.

kate's eyes were dark with grief and hate and loathing.

"tell your people you'll all pay for this."
