For about two years now, I have been searching for a science fiction short story that I first read over thirty years ago. I know that it was in a collection that I re-read many times - I’m an avid re-reader of favourites - and I was convinced it was an Asimov work. Having scoured my bookcases (several times), asked all the science fiction fanatics ( Read more... )

Don't even have to go click that link.

Asimov himself used to joke about that story. Anytime somebody rang him trying to identify one of his stories it turned out to be that one...so much so that it got to the stage that as soon as someone said "I'm trying to find.." he'd break in and answer "The Last Question." He claimed he was getting a reputation for being psychic.

Having said that...I'll go look anyhow...but I'm 100% sure it's not the one I'm looking for. That one has a whole different plot - nothing about live journals at all, lol

Yep...I was right. Have to admit that's also one of my favourite Asimov stories. I'm beginning to believe that the one I'm looking for isn't Asimov at all :(

I most definitely don't mind - I'm honoured (and I'd already "friended" you so I wouldn't lose track of your wonderful journal)

And oops...caught pinching your quote. That was a very thought-provoking entry of yours - found myself nodding agreement with every point you made. It most definitely is 'evolution' and I really do love this 'virtual realm' and all it may herald for our generation, the next generation, and all those thereafter. For the sense of community it brings and those moments of connection, I'm even willing to endure the 'MEME' mania :P
