The only advice I have is make sure they're a crazy you can handle, because you won't get a sane one.

Non grad student here, but friends with a lot of them, and as far as I can tell it's as close and difficult-to-end a relationship as a marriage, and there aren't really any good ways to date for a while before you get into it. So, uh, don't screw up... but that's about the end of my useful advice.

Oh, wait, I've also heard that older profs who've made a name for themselves are often a little more settled and patient, while young and hungry profs often push their grad students harder. Some grad students have overwhelming preferences for one approach, and some have overwhelming preferences for the other.
