Over all, I've been really pleased with the results of my garden. As you may remember, I'm participating in a community, organic garden through the university. However, next year I will not make the mistake of planting gourds. They are seriously trying to take over the world!
When I arrived at the garden yesterday evening after work, the trellis with the gourds had completely collapsed. I'm not sure if this is due to the storm we had the night before, or simply the weight of the humongous gourds. Either way, I propped it back up with a broken garden tool handle, and am hoping for the best.
The reason I decided to grow gourds in the first place is because I thought it would be a fun veggie for the kids, and get them engaged with the garden. As you can see, it looks like we will have some funky gourds, so hopefully it will have been a worthwhile endevour. (As an aside, I'm currently reading "The BFG" to Josh and he loves. Doesn't this gourd look like a small
snozzcumber?)
Although the gourd has tried several times to strangle the corn, I have been able to keep it at bay. I really hope the corn turns out well because this is the veggie the kids enjoy the most.
The cutest watermelon in the history of the world! It's about the size of a pear right now.
See the dead leaves in the background? This is my poor cucumber vine, which is seems the gourd was successful in killing off. It looks like we may still get a few cukes from it, but not nearly as many as I'd have hoped.
Cherry Tomatos! And also, you can see that I really need to weed the garden. I probably have the weediest garden among all the other gardeners, but ah well. I do at least keep my weeds out of my neighbors' plots, so that's good. I just don't have time to do a thorough weeding, so I just snatch a handful or two out everytime I go to water. I think my garden doesnt' seem any worse for it.
