Sohee believes (and that's saying oceans and oceans).
But Sohee also knows that cruel reality will come crashing down on her later on (much, much later on).
She smiles but remains guarded, speaks but says nothing.
She looks out the window and sees Sunmi walking along the street. It surprises Sohee that she blends in so well. Sunmi's dyed hair is showing her true roots (something that their stylists would have never let happen). And the gray of the concrete serves as a perfect background for the mirage.
Suddenly, things come to life around Sohee. Yeeun practices her parts in a soft volume. Hyerim studies her cheat sheet of lyrics for older songs. Sunye is talking to someone about stage directions. And the articulations by Yoobin, for her rap parts, fill Sohee's ears. Everyone's talking at the same time and, although she wants to stop her ears and tell everyone to just be quiet for a second, she stays still.
The only movement she makes is to close her eyes tight. She lets the lights filter in through her eyelids and she imagines Sunmi to be in the shadows.
"Friends forever, right?"
Sohee hears one of Sunmi's last words to her. The words hover just inside the shell of her ear. For a second, she wishes that they were tangible things, so she could grasp them.
Desperate. That's what she is.
Sohee lets out a sigh. Then she feels a tap on her shoulder.
"Ready?"
Yeeun smiles, lips stretching thin over her face.
Sohee smiles too. It's one that doesn't reach her eyes, but Sohee hopes that Yeeun will just chalk it up to thick eye make-up.
"Sure" Sohee lies. "I'm ready."
Sohee believes. She choses to. Because the thought of standing on stage with Sunmi once again is the one thing that keeps her from breaking.
