Old Dixon House
(Impromptu Residence Hall)
The old Dixon estate is located towards the south edge of town, at 513 W. Miskatonic Avenue on the corner of West Street. Once the home of a prominent and wealthy local family, it was willed to Miskatonic University by the last living Dixon who passed away in 1918. The house and its grounds have been derelict for the past decade, the University having yet to decide what use to make of the property. (Not that anyone is advertising the fact, but it's due to the involvement of M.U. and some influential members of the university administration that characters are able to be housed on the estate.)
During the first several weeks, renovation and cleaning will be taking place throughout the house and grounds, so expect handymen, workers, and cleaning women to be present during the day. Though the building is in generally decent repair for having stood vacant for so long, expect your characters to be brushing a fair bit of dust off the furniture. And since the place was never set up to house more than the family and a few occasional guests, expect that furnishings may not be suited to a dormitory-type residence hall.
The ground floor of the house contains a
drawing room, dining hall, and
kitchen, along with a laundry room and access to the cellars below (from which a hidden trap door opens into the tunnel leading down, eventually, through circumlocutions, to the "portal" room where characters arrive).
There is also a library on the ground floor of the house, though don't expect to find any rare books or tomes on its shelves. Though most of the house looks quite undisturbed, the library has been nearly ransacked, many books pulled down and lying in chaotic piles across the floor. The dust in the room is less settled than elsewhere in the house too, as though the disturbances here are more recent.
Characters may choose to sleep in
any room they like. For now, there's no need for anyone to double up unless they want to, but keep in mind that if the house fills up, people (especially those in the larger rooms) might have to take on roommates, at least until additional space can be found to accommodate everyone.
If you do want to share a room, an additional bed can be brought in. Unmarried couples sharing a bed will be severely frowned upon by the locals though, so you might not want to advertise the fact. Same sex couples would be well advised to exercise even more caution: same sex desire in this era was treated as a mental illness, and in accordance with the guiding doctrines of the time, was usually imagined to have some kind of congenital or somatic cause.
Each of the bedrooms will have
a phone, and there is also a phone downstairs in the kitchen.
The bathrooms all have contemporary indoor plumbing, and the kitchen has an old ice box as well as an electric refrigerator. There is, of course, no television, but there is a
radio, as well as an old phonograph player and an upright piano.
(NOTE: The interior images are intended to give players an idea of general style and look. You needn't feel strictly bound my them. The bedrooms, in particular, might have a range of decor.)
