I actually understand what you mean. The first I had heard of Taking Back Sunday was indded 'Louder Now'. I was like "ok, not bad, but pretty forgetable" and then never looked into anymore fo their music. Then I heard their first album and I was stunned at how different (and much better) it was. I then felt stupid for having judged them on their thrid album. :(
I am also against music elitism, but hey, it happens to every fan of music sometimes. However, you weren't really being elitist at all. Opinionated (and for good reason), but not elitist.
Yeah, your reasons are totally sound. Being an elitist would require you to start disdaining them on the basis of them being something only the hoi polloi would listen to or something. I dunno. The fact that they actually got crap as they hit mainstream is just a coincidence. Maybe?
yeah there is a difference. i wouldn't ever call myself a music elitist...i like all kinds of crap, and never turn my back on something because it's more mainstream or popular or whatever. hell i love sclub7. but it's always sad when a band loses they're concept of self...something that makes as band great, only to be replaced by something much more generic. There's nothing wrong with a band changing and moving on with their music...the most notable example that comes to mind is radiohead, whose each album is entirely different yet brilliant (IMO). However, there is a growing trend of certain bands discarding their history in favour of something that's much less unique- similar examples that come to mind are AFI and Lostprophets, among others, whose lastest albums seemed to have traded their unique trademark signature sounds for rentapoprock
