Here's me getting excited about Art History.

The movement of Postmodernism began with architecture, as a reactionary movement against the perceived blandness and hostility present in the Modern movement. Modern Architecture as established and developed by masters such as Walter Gropius and Philip Johnson was focused on the pursuit of an ideal ( Read more... )

Interesting.

I come from an Engineering background and as a minor result dispise both architects and industrial designers. My mindset is basically 'function' and dislike weird little arty bollocks like making the walls at 86 degrees to each other.

Which in itself is profoundly weird since I love the art form of the writen word. To me the art of taking a collection of verbs and nouns out of your lexicon, rearanging them in a new order, and, as a result, having the power to take your reader to new levels of emotion is mind blowingly powerful.

Go figure :D

But what if having the walls at 86 degrees is the function? Lolz. I agree, some of it is bollocks really. :D

Well if that IS the function then that is different :)

Trouble is a lot of the more 'design' type people very rarely consider how to ever build things or thing that if the room isn't square then you can't fit a table into the corner either.

I have a weird love/hate relationship with some stuff - for example I love the three colour paint on that building on King William in town (which a lot of people complained was going to make the city look ugly). On the other hand 4 years ago I was involved with Adelaide City Councils plans to royally screw up Grote st and saw some of the proposals for the 'art works' to go on the street.

WTF?!?! It's a lump of metal!!!

Not like it is a 7 metre high giant spider sculpture or anything - now THAT was cool :D

Yeah, getting the balance between function and aesthetic is the issue.

Apparently they had a lot of issues building the Arts Centre on Light Sq, because the architect never specified how things were supposed to be done - such as bricks on the ceilings and so on.

Which three colour paint building is that?

Pah. No room for frivolous ornament in this modern world!

Apparently males are more likely to have synesthesia.
