Party

I went to Craig's grandad's party this evening. Half of Bootle seemed to be there. Initially I was fairly demure (shut up, those of you who actually know me) and I managed to field off the many questions about when Craig and I are getting married, which university I am at and what job I do ( Read more... )

"I realised that I would have only felt ashamed of myself if I had shut up when people tried to intimidate me" exactly, good for you! You did well to bear a whole evening of it!! Is this your boyfriend's family?

Thank you, it means a lot to know that someone else can see where I'm coming from. It was his grandad's family, friends, neighbours, etc.

I'm no fan of Roy Chubby Brown's comedy, but having seen a lot of interviews and one documentary on him, I definitely don't think he's a racist. In fact, the 2 times I've seen any of his videos (my brother was a fan), I never heard him crack one racist joke. He certainly tells a lot of sexist jokes but even these fairly scripted with no real feeling in them; at the end of his videos he always has a written thanks to his "long-suffering wife"!

I thought the same until I saw a documentary a few months ago. I'm pretty sure it was that one. At the end it showed him being openly, unashamedly racist in the pub with his friends, the extent to which made the documentary maker feel very uncomfortable and change his views about the Chubby's "they're only jokes" get-out clause. It really was vile. He tried to justify the racist material he had just been filmed using on stage, then in the same evening he made unashamedly racist jokes about Muslims and Asylum seekers with his friends. It was inexcusable.
