Tonight's writing was not impressive at all. What I'm posting I actually wrote yesterday. They were right, third week is the hardest time to keep going.
Kit was still looking way up the building at the height they had just descended unscathed. "I can't believe we did that. We should so be dead right now."
Gen was rubbing the feeling back into her hands. "Well, we're not, so let's get moving before they can get back down the elevator to us." She stood and pulled Kit to his feet. His hand suddenly tightened on her arm, "They're not waiting for the elevator!" Gen turned to see what he was looking at. Way above them, she could just make out two figures launching themselves out of the window and barreling down at them. "Rats! Move it!" Gen dragged Kit into motion towards the edge of the roof. She made it the last 10 feet to the ground by dangling by her fingertips the length of her body and then letting herself fall the rest of the way. She was worried it would take too much time to convince Kit off the roof but the impending capture was enough for him. He jumped and she caught him safely enough. Then they were running out of the alleyway and into the street. It was an outdoor market of sorts. More like a technology outdoor market. Nobody paid them any attention so when Gen saw a good hiding place, she grabbed Kit and tossed him behind a stand and threw herself flat on the ground behind it. She was banking on the fact that the Enforcers wouldn't have seen them veer off when they had made the corner. Sure enough, they zoomed by without even a glance in their direction. Gen moved over a flat computer board out of her line of vision. "What kind of place is this?" she said aloud. "Tech Sellers," Kit answered her. "Cheap parts and poor quality, but sometimes you can find stuff that lasts for awhile here." His tone was slipping into concern as he saw Gen lean back against the wall and close her eyes. "Are you ok?" Gen nodded, "I'm just tired all of the sudden. You ok?" She opened her eyes to look at Kit. He had taken her right wrist into his hands and was looking at the white wristband attached to it. "Oh, I'd forgotten that was on there," Gen said, looking at the different flickering lights on it. "What is this anyway?"
"They call them EPAC's. It's short for Easy Programming Access Clasp. The Enforcers have them so they can be reprogrammed and analyzed without having to come back to base. Dr. Fayette was going to try and...um...reprogram you since you didn't have any programming...but..." He stopped, a question written on his face. "What?" Gen asked. "You're not an Enforcer, are you?" Kit asked. Gen shook her head no. "You're really a person?" he asked as if he couldn't believe it. "Yup, sure am. At least, I hope I still am, but that's another story. Can you get it off?"
"I've only seen it done and I'd need tools that are back in the lab." Kit was pressing a couple of buttons in sequence and looking at a digital readout on a small screen on the wristband. "It's strange, it reads like it could work on you. But I've never seen one tried on a human before." He saw that Gen wasn't really listening anymore, she was starting to nod off. He put a hand on her shoulder and shook her a bit. "Gen?" Gen startled awake, "Oh! Sorry. I'm just so tired. I don't know if I could run anymore from here." The wristband had started a slow low beeping sound. "What's that," Gen asked. Kit looked at the band's screen. "It's a general alert. It's trying to get you to go back to base."
"Why?" Gen asked.
"It says to recharge your cells, but you're not an enforcer so maybe it's just reading that you're tired." Kit noticed that Gen was focusing on the wall behind him. "Is that an outlet?" she pointed to a familiar three slit opening in the wall. "Huh? What's an outlet?" Kit asked but Gen was already sliding over towards it. "I'm still learning about what I really am but one thing I have learned is that electricity works well with this body of mine." She reached her hand towards it, but Kit grabbed her hand to stop her. "Are you crazy? You're gonna get yourself killed." Gen was about to pull free from him when the white wristband glowed green on her wrist. They both looked down at it. "They've found us using the EPAC as a signal!" Kit exclaimed. "No time for finesse," Gen said and pulling her hand free of Kit's grasp, she jammed her fingers straight into the electrical socket. The electricity flowed up her fingers, through her arm, and around her whole body. Her skin gave way to the silvery black liquid form as her cells soaked up the energy like sponges. The tiredness fell away and Gen felt a whole lot better. Kit was transfixed by what she was doing. When she let go of the electrical flow and withdrew her hand, her disguise was gone and she was back in black again. "So much for blending in," she said. "Your eyes are glowing," Kit said quietly. Gen blinked a couple of times, hoping that it wasn't a permanent side effect. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you...again." She got to a crouching position and held out her hand to him. "We gotta go before they find..." She didn't get to finish that sentence.
The stand they were behind was ripped from it's mountings with a crash and tossed aside like a piece of cardboard. There were a few exclamations of surprise as Gen and Kit were exposed from their hiding place. Gen was looking an Enforcer straight in the helmet. He was drawing a weapon and Gen was feeling around next to herself for something to defend herself with. She found something and grabbed a hold of the long board-like contraption that was now laying on the ground. The second she grabbed it, something went through her like a shot. Gen knew in that instant what she was holding onto. It was an antigravity pod and she knew everything about it, right down to the very matrix of it. As the Enforcer brought out his net shooting gun, Kit was cowering back and wondering why Gen was frozen in place. He suddenly saw that her feet were liquefying underneath her and reforming somehow.
Before he knew what was happening as the Enforcer took aim in slow motion, Gen shot out an arm and grabbed Kit as she activated the newly formed board beneath her feet. The antigrav motors kicked in and the two of them shot out of the way just as the net was flying towards them. The duo zoomed past the Enforcers and the gathered crowd and away above the crowd and the marketplace. The Enforcers retreated to their vehicle but before they could take off, Gen and Kit were two blocks away and gaining speed. "Not so fast!" Kit was trying to say while hanging on for dear life. Gen was totally lost in the moment, the fact that she was flying above the heads of everyone on the ground at breakneck speed. "This is amazing!" she yelled back at Kit over the wind. Kit managed to look back. "Ohhhh, they're chasing us!"
"Hang on!" Gen picked up more speed, trying to keep their distance from the black flying car. "I don't know which is worse, death by crashing or death by the Enforcers," Kit was ready to throw in the towel for sure. "Corner!" Gen warned as she threw them around a sharp corner and then again at the next, trying to think of ways to throw them off. "It's not going to work!" Kit said, tugging her arm. "You've still got the EPAC on." Gen bent her arm behind her as much as possible. "Try and get it off then," she told him.
"With what? I'm hanging on!"
"I can't do it, I'm driving! You think of something!"
Kit made a frustrated noise of being under too much pressure. "We'll have to stop somewhere at least and if we do they'll catch up and it's goodbye for both of us. Oh, why didn't I stay in the lab??" He managed to hang on with one hand and was trying some button combinations with his other hand on the wristband. "This is impossible at this speed and with no tools!" Kit said exasperated. "Can you at least turn off the GPS part of it?" Gen just missed hitting the corner of a building, trying to cut her corners faster. She didn't dare look back to see how close her persuers were getting, she would lose control and crash for sure. She was zipping around skyscraper buildings, trying to find a good hiding spot to dip into. "He's gonna shoot, look out!" Kit warned and let go of the wristband to cling to Gen as she started a nosedive. The energy shot sailed harmlessly over their heads. We're too exposed up here, Gen thought as she dove back into the city. It was dangerous, but she had to lose them somehow. She tried dodging around a couple of flying cars to try and throw them into her persuers paths. A couple of patrons were shocked as she came so close to hitting them in midair. I wonder what the penalty is for jaywalking up here, Gen wondered with a smile.
Another shot whizzed by them, burying itself in a wall as they passed. "They're getting closer, can't you go faster?"
"Not with all this dodging and weaving. You keep an eye on them, I can't look back."
Around in front of her, where she could see, came an Enforcer out of nowhere, balancing on his own antigrav board. Gen saw him just in time to swerve, but not in time to see where she was swerving into. A wall loomed before her and they crashed headlong into it. Gen took the brunt of it and the two of them fell in a heap. Gen was seeing stars and felt like someone just slapped her full in the face with a bat. "Ohhhh," she groaned, trying to move without hurting. "Where did that come from?" It was a solid cement wall that she'd hit. It was a wonder she didn't break every bone in her body. "Kit?" She looked around from where she was laying to see where he had ended up. She hoped he was ok. But before she could, she heard a familiar click and looked up in time to see a net flying towards her. Gen tried to say no, tried to move, but it was too late. The net was wrapped around her and was draining her away. In a couple of seconds, she couldn't move at all. Gen was slipping away, she could just make out a pair of hands pawing at her and Kit saying something in the background about getting it off of her.
The manhole cover in the street near her head opened and Gen saw a blurry hand come out with a weapon. She recognized it from the store breaking and entering. Oh, this is going to hurt, she thought to herself as the hand pulled the trigger.
The sonic blast knocked back the Enforcers, causing the one holding the Absorbing weapon to drop it in the confusion. Kit's ears were ringing, but he could still move around as he crawled to Gen's side with his hands over his ears in case they did it again. Gen was still wrapped tightly in the net but once the Enforcer dropped the gun, it had stopped draining her energy. She wasn't moved and Kit was worried when he saw her eyes were closed. He let go of his ringing ears and tried to shake Gen awake. "Come on, don't give up now!" He didn't know how loud he was talking but right now he didn't care. Arms were reaching for him from the open manhole and they got ahold of him to drag him inside. Kit grabbed ahold of Gen's body before they could drag him further. "We can't leave her here!" he said. At first, he wasn't sure they had heard him, but finally, a second pair of arms attached to a body appeared and quickly grabbed Gen, net and all, and they all disappeared into the dark hole under the street.
It was damp. Damp and cold. Not to mention really dark. Gen really wasn’t sure which way was up yet. Every now and again, a light would go by, but it hurt her eyes too much to try and see what was around her yet. One of her hands dragged in a cold puddle of water and she made a uncomfortable groaning sound at the shock of the cold.
“She’s starting to come around, keep moving.”
Someone was carrying her around her middle. She was draped over the arm like a sack of potatoes with her arms dangling free. She felt incredibly sore and cold all over. Not to mention the back and forth motion of the person walking was starting to make her head spin again. Gen groaned again and tried to move.
“Rats, she’s starting to move now. Jim, why can’t you give me a hand?”
“I don’t know why we didn’t just leave her. She’s a liability you know.”
“No, I’m not leaving her behind.”
That was voice she recognized. “Kit?” she said rather fuzzily. “Gen?” A pair of hands were trying to get her up so he could see her face. The person carrying stopped for a second and set her down in a sitting position on a rock against the wall. Gen could make out that they were in a tunnel and water was flowing by near her feet. Kit was trying to see her face in the dark, his voice all concerned. “You ok? I thought...You were in that net for so long.” Gen tried to smile in the dark, “Still here,” she managed to get out.
“We can’t stop, we’ve got to keep going.” This was presumably the guy named Jim. Gen’s vision was clearing a bit and she could see the other two men in the tunnel. They were dressed in dingy one piece jumpsuits, like mechanics. It was the same costumes that the people from the break in at the store were wearing. Jim had a scowling expression on his face. “I still say we should have left her. If she’s so important to him, he should carry her.” His friend snorted, “No offense Kit, but I don’t think he could carry anything above 20 pounds.” Jim shook his head. “Shouldn’t trust her, s’all I’m sayin’” he mumbled to himself.
Gen ran a hand through her damp hair and found herself staring at the EPAC still strapped to her wrist. The lights were no longer flashing on it. Kit saw her looking at it. “Yeah, they shorted it out. I hope it didn’t hurt.” Gen shook her head slightly as a no. “Ok, break’s over.” The unnamed friend leaned towards Gen and hefted her over one shoulder in a fireman’s hold and they continued to trek through the tunnels. Gen wanted to protest, but she was too exhausted to do so. So she just let herself be carried along, wondering where they were headed. She could see Kit walking behind them, keeping an eye on her. Somehow, she and him had gotten a bond over their escape. He’d probably saved her life up there by taking her with them. She wasn’t sure how long those Enforcers were going to drain her energy away. A yawn cut her thinking short and soon she was sleeping against the shoulder of the unknown man carrying her.
When Gen opened her eyes again, she was lying on her back. For a split second, she thought she was back on the table in the lab again. But that thought dissipated as she felt the mattress and pillow beneath her. Over her was a thin gray blanket and laying on the blanket was Kit’s head where he had fallen asleep in his vigil of watching her. Gen smiled, wondering what it would have been like to have a younger brother instead of being an only child.
“Awake, are you?”
Gen turned her head to see another person standing in the room. It was a small room, like a storage area that had been turned into the place she was now sleeping in. There were a couple of monitors here and there, but most of them were off. The figure was still in the dark, so she couldn’t see his face. “Feeling better?” he asked. Gen moved slowly so as not to disturb sleeping Kit and she scooted herself up a bit to a more of sitting position. “Some yes, thank you,” she answered. “Who are you?”
