Truax allowed himself a smile of satisfaction. The simplest solutions were always the best. He got up from his chair, crossing the room and opened the secret door to the elevator. It whirred away with him inside with barely a sound. Truax watched each lab fly by in turn through the clear plastic door, getting glimpses here and there of those working under him in various experiments. He would never admit it, but this was one of the few things he was geniunely proud of. The way all of his work had cumulated into this sublime expression of science at its best. Unhindered, unfettered scientific research and discovery.
The elevator slowed and stopped on the floor labeled plainly on the wall as "Main Lab". Two enforcers in their black gear, weapons at the ready, were there to greet him. They snapped to attention in recognition of their lord and master.
The white double doors slid away as Truax approached them. This room was his own personal laboratory. Anyone entering it without his expressed permission was immediately vaporized by the guards outside. What wasn't readily noticeable was the two guards were specially designed to always be charged up. An almost imperceptible clear plastic cord ran from the back of their shoes directly into the wall and a separate power line system with it's own backups and safety systems. Once, they had been attached to the main power lines that fed the city itself, but after the attempt last year to cut the lines by the underground resistance, Truax had made it even harder for them.
In comparison to the other labs, Truax's was larger with a higher ceiling and less specialized. He had no assistants, no other security other than his special enforcers. In various places around the room were his own inventions. The large silver tube that converted people into Enforcers, now slightly modified to be more effective. The main hub of the computer system running through the city and the entire world was here, the large screen overlooking the console while different lighted dots moved around the map of the city on the screen.
But it was the Vortex Door that he approached now, paying no attention to any others. As he strode towards the familiar arched doorway, a dark shadowy figure turned slightly from its position next to the machine.
"Name and Designation," Truax said crisply to the figure, his hand fingering a hidden weapon under his sashed tunic. He could never be too careful. The lithe figure blinked behind its dark plastic visor that all the Enforcers wore on their helmets. After a second's hesitation, they said in a low metered tone, "Enforcer 10, Section 5, Specialized Warfare First Class." Truax breathed an inward sigh of relief. He moved towards a separate computer, motioning for Enforcer 10 to follow. "I have a job for you, a highly specialized job." He sat down at the computer console and began creating a new set of programming for the Enforcer. The figure stood silently next to the console, watching Truax without really seeing him. At a nod from the Professor, it reached a hand out to place on the download pad shaped like an oversized green hand on the console. The green hand flashed underneath the black 3D hand as the Enforcer absorbed it's new instructions. Truax watched the familiar youthful face with a sense of mounting glee at the simplicity of his scheme. That failed experiment was going to be eradicated once and for all.
Enforcer 10's eyes returned from their silvery liquid state as they withdrew their hand from the console. "Understood," they said in low monotone.
Truax already had a couple of things to hand them, including a small communication handset. The vortex door was powering up behind them via the Cosmic Charger on the roof. If they had been outside, the beam of negative energy could be seen from anywhere in the city shooting up towards the stars. The archway door flickered a few times before the swirling blue poured into it, creating a funnel leading out into the time vortex. The Enforcer placed all objects given to them inside of themselves before walking towards the swirling blue vortex without the slightest hesitation. Truax only covered his eyes with his arm at the last possible second as a bright light flashed in the room like a flashbulb. And Enforcer 10 was gone.
Truax smiled.
