Taking my Christmas present for a test run.

I went out and bought a new camera yesterday.

For any buffs out there who might be interested, I purchased a Nikon D40 digital SLR, complete with two lenses, and various accessories, including a tripod.  This is my Christmas present from my dearly beloved, a replacement for my Canon Olympus (which still takes pictures, but won't show you how many, ( Read more... )

What fun to have a new toy! :-)

Walking Bon in the woods today I also watched ducks walking over the ice on a pond with soft almost-cracking noises, and occasionally they'd go through and drop into the water. They didn't seem to mind.

Nice new shiny toy. *g* Although it's not, really, as I bought the black body rather than the silver one ...

Ducks are very hardy things, and probably go ice skating when people aren't looking. It was a little surprising to find quite so much ice in the canal, although I guess there isn't the same currents and flows to take it away that there would be in a river. And the other surprise was how well it came out in the photograph. I suspect that was because the sun was so bright. It has been a lovely day today. Cold, but lovely.

Hope you and Bon enjoyed your trip to the woods!

Yup. Works very well. :-) Photos are a lot crisper and clearer than the previous one. (I've reduced and compacted most of these.)

All the bits fit, too, although I haven't tried the tripod yet. I fitted the telephoto and had this sudden urge to turn into a papparazzi ... fortunately I resisted it! *g*

Oh, I will be making lots of use of it, have no fear! I will be taking it home next weekend to try it out on cats (and bits of Brigg if the weather is still good.)

Watch this space ...

interesting, I just bought the very same camera and I'm quite happy with it as well. It does feel more like a real camera to me. I didn't buy any extra lenses yet, but that's coming next pay :)

The second lens was on offer as part of an 'all-in' deal (along with the camera bag and a flashgun) - I suspect these two (the standard and the telephoto) will do most of the stuff I might be tempted to try. A wide angle might be nice, but it's a lot of money to invest for something that probably won't get used very often.

I think it's the lenses that make it feel like real photography somehow - the fact that you can interchange them, and that you're holding the camera in one hand and steadying/focusing it with the other, It gives you a much greater sense of control over the result.

And it takes a much nicer photo, too!
